Rites of Passage
The Rites of Passage is a ritual done by ivierae to mark adult hood. It's a fun music fest with an important history behind it.
History
Late into the Great Human-Ivierae War. Cilalk’schiluhsche Benoist, acting as lead command in the war on the side of ivierae, was growing tired of the war with Highking Ånøy.
The exact details are unknown, even Cilalk’schiluhsche‘s powers has been debated and if he even used it. But it's widely accepted that he walked straight into Ånøy's castle, performing a throat singing song about how It would be better to just end the war. The song had moved him so much that he called off the war, defying his God's orders to carry on.
Since then, Cilalk’schiluhsche taught his kids to throat sing, and his village members followed suit. Because it takes a long time to learn, it's considered a great accomplishment and signs of maturity for one to successfully learn it.
Execution
Preparation for the Rites of Passage (RoP) involves the ivierae spending time in a single environment with no help, where the elf will work to make a song. There's no set message for the song, it can be anything the elf finds worthy to sing about. The elf can also sing without an instrument, but people will be more impressed if they play one.
For the fest itself, it's a huge party that usually all of the elf's family attends. The elf performing the song will usually, but not always spend the time of the party to prepare. When they're ready, they'll gather to a stage where the ivierae will finally sing. When the song is over the biological father or minather will judge it, and decide if the child is ready to become an adult. If they are, the father/minather will gift them a cae (A short, hoodless poncho essentially).
Components and tools
Food for the party (There is no required specified food items, it can be anything, though tea is popular), a wooden stage, and a cae.
Participants
The entire family participates in the ceremony. The most important person in it is the biological father or minather, aside for the young elf.
Observance
The rituals differ ivierae to ivierae, but generally it's encouraged to start on the elf's 1,260th birthday (Equivalent to a human's 18th birthday).
