The Dock

The Dock is a small, mostly defunct research outpost in the Coprates Chasmata of the Valles Marineris on Mars. It retains a small population of permanent residents, but with little scientific interest remaining in that section of Valles Marineris, and a lack of the infrastructure needed to capitalize on nearby resources, it has been withering away for the better part of a century. Future prospects look slim for those stubborn enough to remain, and the town is, by damn near all accounts, a rather depressing little forgotten corner of Coprates.

Government

Though its populace can vote in regional elections, they are largely disenfranchised from any real high-level political influence due to their small population, and on a functional level, the Dock is politically independent, with the Administration (originally in charge of coordinating the outpost's research and handling logistics, now having morphed into a loosely organized town council) serving as the main political authority in the town.

Geography

The Dock perches right on the edge of a cliff leading to one of the deepest sections of the Coprates Chasmata (and Valles Marineris in general). Most of the essential infrastructure is set a ways away from the cliff edge, but the town is, generally speaking, quite precarious. Stories of people falling to their deaths are not uncommon, and its been said that a single marsquake of high enough magnitude could wipe the town off the map. The area surrounding the town is fairly flat, punctuated only by small, rocky hills.
