Blood Amber

The forest gnomes of the Whisper Woods gather a special kind of amber from the strange trees that grow there. This amber is blood red, and can be used as a focus for black magic without shattering.
The gnomes' access to the unique gem has resulted in a society where necromancy is as normal as any other sort of magic, in stark contrast to much of the rest of Mistral. The gnomes prioritize utility even in death, and often raise their dead to be used for labour in their small villages. 
They keep their supply of blood amber under lock and key, refusing to sell it to outsiders for fear of losing what little advantage they have over the wild elves.
