Senators of the Thardic Republic
The Thardic Senate is said to be extremely self-serving and corrupt having mismanaged the Thardic Republic since it's a foundation. The office is unpaid but very profitable with numerous perks and privileges.
Requirements
Any free citizen of the Republic can become a senator, but few can afford the cost of the "gifts" sometimes over many hundreds of gold pieces, necessary to ensure election.
Appointment
The Senate has 68 members appointed by a two-thirds vote of all the existing senators. New members are elected when a senator dies or retires.
Duties
The Senates meet yearly, although attendance is not mandatory, throughout the winter months, from the beginning of Ilvin (10th month) to the end of Morgat (12th month). It may also be called during wars with foreign states, for treason trials, national emergencies.
The most senior member of the Senate serves as president, and Senators speak on issues in the order of reverse seniority.
The Senate serves as both the legislature and the supreme court of the Thardic Republic, determining taxes, appointing government officials, declaring war, making treaties, and judging high crimes.
Benefits
The office is unpaid but is very profitable due to the gifts senators receive. Senators are the most-favored citizens of the Republic, having numerous privileges. Including;
- Only they can wear Purple Cloaks and wear a Gold Ring on their right hand.
- Senators may not be restrained, arrested, or executed except by warrant of treason issued by a majority vote of the Senate.
- Senators have the right to speak in any court of law.
- They may examine any government official’s records.
- They can stay any execution or commute any sentence not ordered by the Senate.
- A senator may commandeer the services of any slave or citizen for assistance.
- Impeding, harming, or failing to cooperate with a senator is treason, with death the mandatory sentence.
Accoutrements & Equipment
Only senators can they can wear Purple Cloaks and wear a Gold Ring on their right hand. Additionally, impersonating a senator is considered treason.
Members are elected for life.
