Half-Dragon

When a dragon in polymorphed form mates with another creature, the union sometimes produces half-dragon offspring. A creature might also transform into a half-dragon as a result of a mad wizard's spell or a ritual bath in dragon's blood. In all these cases, the result is a creature that combines the essence of a dragon with the form of its original race. Regardless of their origins, all half-dragons have similar features and appearance, gaining special senses, resistance to destructive energy, and a breath weapon. Half-dragons are incapable of having natural-born offspring. Those that wish to propagate must find other ways to do so, almost always involving magic. By way of compensation, half-dragons are blessed with long life. Barring unforeseen misfortune, a typical half-dragon's life expectancy is twice that of its non-draconic line, so that a half-dragon human might live more than a century and a half. Half-dragons inherit personality traits common to their draconic heritage, so that half-gold dragons are often shy and secretive, while half-copper dragons are impish and playful. Half-green dragons are deceitful, while half-white dragons are often dim-witted brutes. These traits are tempered by a half-dragon's other lineage, but greed, arrogance, and paranoia are qualities that even good-aligned half-dragons often possess.

Base Race Traits Modification

The half-dragon is a subrace that can be applied to any race which has subraces. For races that don't have subrace options, choosing the half-dragon subrace means making changes to your character's base traits as follows. If a race isn't listed below, use your best judgment when adjusting racial statistics to accommodate this subrace. Dragonborn cannot be half-dragons.
  • Human Half-Dragon: Instead of your normal ability score increase, two different ability scores of your choice each increase by 1.
  • Half-Orc Half-Dragon: You lose the Relentless Endurance and Savage Attacks traits, and instead of your normal Ability Score Increase, your Strength score increases by 2.
  • Half-Elf Half-Dragon: You lose the Skill Versatility trait, and instead of your normal Ability Score Increase, your Charisma score increases by 2.
  • Tiefling Half-Dragon: Lose the Hellish Resistance and Infernal Legacy traits, and instead of your normal Ability Score Increase, your Charisma score increases by 2.

Subrace Traits

Design Note: This subrace option allows any race to become more powerful than the dragonborn race as it is presented in the System Reference Document. This is considered acceptable because the original author considers the dragonborn to be underpowered. If you intend to use this subrace alongside dragonborn in your campaign setting, consider using the greater dragonborn race variant.
  • Ability Score Increase: Choose one of your Strength, Constitution, or Charisma score to increase by 1. You can't increase the same ability score that is increased by your base race.
  • Age: Half-dragons live about twice as long as a member of their base race.
  • Darkvision: Your draconic ancestry has granted you superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
  • Draconic Nature: Your creature type is considered to be both dragon and humanoid.
  • Draconic Ancestry: You have draconic ancestry. Choose one type of dragon from the Draconic Ancestry table of the dragonborn race. Your breath weapon and damage resistance are determined by the dragon type, as shown in the table.

  • Breath Weapon: You can use your action to exhale destructive energy. Your draconic ancestry determines the size, shape, and damage type of the exhalation.
When you use your breath weapon, each creature in the area of the exhalation must make a saving throw, the type of which is determined by your draconic ancestry. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d8 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increases to 3d8 at 6th level, 4d8 at 11th level, and 5d8 at 16th level.   After you use your breath weapon, you can't use it again until you complete a short or long rest. Draconic Resistance. You have resistance to the damage type associated with your draconic ancestry. Racial Feats Half-dragons qualify for any feats that list "Dragonborn" as a prerequisite. Half-dragons must still meet any other prerequisites the feat might have.
