Reef Runner

The Reef Runner is the common lexicon for a creature used primarily as a mount or beast of burden in the Nijon Archipelago.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Reef Runner is a amphibious reptilian creature roughly the same size as a horse. It's body is built for rapid movement on land or sea. It has two different sets of lungs one connected to its nostrils and the other to a set of gills located on the sides of it's long neck. These gills are concealed behind the frills that cling to its body when out of the water. While in the water a membrane located inside the inner nostril blocks the airflow to and from the lungs attached to them this membrane's deployment or retraction triggers the opening of the gills on the neck. The appendages of the Reef Runner are extremely durable as well as very supple and flexible. The soles of it's feet are covered in a material similar to that of turtle shells allowing them to run along coral reefs with ease. Wheather in the water or on land the Reef Runner is the best you to find in the archipeligo in terms of speed. Their speed is peerless amongst mounts the closest being flying mounts such as griphions which the Reef Runners can keep up with on land whilest they fly. It has been equated that on land a Reef Runner can move as fast as a cheetah and in water as fast as a black marlin.
Conservation Status
The Reef Runner is a highly prized and protected species, namely in the Nijion Archipelago. There are several regions within specialize in the training and breeding of them, both of which are closely guarded family secrets .
