Sarkaas Mining Outpost (Saar...kass)
The Sarkass mining Station located on the largest asteroid in the 2-belts and its name is Sarkass. The colony set up some 300 years ago by the male spider, Harrket who died but 80 years ago. Spiders live so long, I swear. The old mining corporation He founded the modern means of asteroid and comet mining and excavation, superseding the old dangerous cowboy ways of the past where death was common, almost celebrated and the only miners out there were the hardiest of folk. Spiders and insect make excellent asteroid miners because of their hard shell and the need to only breath in the vacuum of space. The webs also are advantageous in the case someone slips their mooring line and begins to drift off into space. Something all too common in the mini-Grav of floating rocks in space.
Harkett developed means for which safety was put first in the mining operations and since he introduced these methods, deaths have decreased from a 1 in 4 chance in 1225 A.C. to 1 in 500,000 today. Sarkass Station is the largest station, but there are many other satellite stations in the 2-belts all interconnected through well-worn shipping lanes.
The stations mine the rock in the most respectful means and nothing is wasted. Even the slag rock is put back into the stone from which it came so as to not upset the balance of orbits in the Belts. In the past, careless mining more than once sent asteroid careening into the homeworld or colonies and they had to be knocked off-course so as to avoid death and disaster. Sarkass station sends out mining fleets to acquire mohnium, nickel, manganese, magnesium, iron. All metals are available in some form in The Belts. It's the extraction process that's a bit tricky. With the discovery of the Orbiting Solar platform, the need for Mohnium has increased exponentially and it is beyond rare and extremely difficult to extract.
