Yorden and Rhanün Notes
For this conflict, I wanted to focus more on the rivalry between the Yorden and Rhanün. Neither of the two are the main focus for the main story, but come into play later, so this proved to be an ample time to develop them.
The Rhanün are currently very far from any interaction with the Yorden. Situated far north, and behind a great wall spanning half the continent, it seemed like not much was going on, and if anything did, it would be a long time before Englas would have any involvement. Characters like Lirien would encounter the new offensive of the Rhanün when called north to investigate disturbances, coming face to face with a warband and a God-Speaker taking on the aspect of Borr. All of this is big, but too far away.
In the meantime, having the Rhanün actively attempt to subvert the efforts of their enemy, and acquire their greatest weapon, would be a great story. Almost like a spy drama. An incredibly dangerous task, requiring the almost impossible of these spies. Subterfuge, espionage, assassination, all by an enemy the Yorden believe to be too tribalistic to even develop the concept of espionage.
And of course their goals. Goal one, to discover the location of the Broken Vault and relieve its armory. These weapons are vital to the Yorden military, and represent an unknown history; the vault was built by neither Rhanün nor Yorden, and functions in mysterious ways. The knowledge to be gained from understanding it could be immense. Furthermore, these weapons are incredibly dangerous in the hands of a proficient wielder, and it remains to be seen if they respond to Yorden hands only. If they don't, then the Yorden may have a growing issue on their hands.
Goal two, observe and interrupt the efforts of the Millenium Council. I always enjoyed the idea of a massive congregation of individuals, all representing different societal functions, coming together to determine the actions of their people. And succeed at that. But there are problems there too. The public rely too much on these council members. Only individuals who properly represent their constituents have a place on the council; if they die, the public lacks an effectuve mouthpiece until a replacement is installed. If they can even find one that is half as successful as the previous member.
A lot can be done here, showing that the Rhanün can offer more than just warfare in this conflict. They are more advanced than first thought, and have developed the ability to utilise a form of mysticism that the Yorden have been trying to learn for centuries. A direct spit in their face.
Other ideas to include:
- Members of the Magician's Court discovering the Whisperers. Kept underwraps to prevent hysteria.
- Infiltrating the academy to further understand the magical prowess of the Yorden
- Murder investigations by the city guard, caused by Whisperers killing those that bear witness to their identities
- Whisperers suberting the Council by bringing to light the tactics used by the Magician's Court to hold sway. Possibly exposed to the public.
- Broken Blades being used by Whisperers during the escape of a heist
