Gate Watcher is one of the 7 Scions of Zohar. Their body, a made of a special mechanical and magically infused metal, is but one of several their soul inhabits.
For centuries he waited in the center of the Mining Apparatus, connected to the system's mainframe via his magi-mechanical body. He hoped to one day restore power to the machine so he could safely shut off the Aperture to the Astral Realm, thus relieving the world of one of its oldest wounds. Unfortunately the Apparatus only had so much power, with the majority of it split between the 6 Elemental Apparatus Towers, all jealously guarded by the Lacrima's holders. Unable to leave, he instead chose to save those who were lured to the desert for the purpose of obtaining power, or whatever else drove them to the Desert.
He first met the party after they successfully recovered the Tower of Light's Lacrima, saving them from a collapsed tower in the process. Beings the first ones to complete a tower in ages, as well as all six being able to speak a Galderic language, he found the party to be his best chance to shut down the Apparatus.
