Bigwall
Bigwall is a medium-sized town in the middle of the Brodnak Flat, a vast high-altitude steppe so named for its unending flatness and lack of large foliage to break up the horizon. The town is the capital and most populous "city" of the Brodnak province, which, along with the Gelkis and Magram provinces, is located entirely on the steppe. Bigwall is noted for three things: being built in the shadow of the largest above-ground Outsider ruins, crops, and being the primary trading partners of the various Orc and Centaur clans that make the Brodnak Flat their home.
Bigwall is named after the Outsider ruins it was built around. The extant ruins are an L shaped wall, made of hundreds massive grey stones the size of a decent inn or manor house. The walls are hundreds of feet high, making them visible for miles on the plains, and stretch about 5 (city) blocks to the north and south, and about 15 blocks to the east and west. The town has grown larger than that, though, and now sprawls out lazily on all sides of the ruins. The town grew up in the "elbow" of the wall, protected as it is from the high winds that regularly assault the denizens of the Brodnak Flat. What the ruins used to be, no one knows; no serious excavations have been put into excavations under the town or digging into the hills to the southeast of town.
All around the town, except in the hills to the southeast, is farmland. The farmers here grow mostly corn and wheat, but beans and potatoes and other vegetables are not uncommon. The farmers produce more food than the locals need, so the surplus is sold off to other provinces or even to other countries. The town used to be quite small until the Emperor made a deal with the governor of Brodnak: the Emperor would grant the governor money to facilitate new farmers moving to the town. It was a win-win: the growing Empire needed more food, and the governor got more citizens, taxes, and grant money. With more farmers moving there, there was a need for other types of businesses as well, and the town naturally grew to be surprisingly large for its location. With growth came protection, and the sheer size of the town now is able to deter all but the most determined raids from the more aggressive tribes of the area.
There are an unknown amount of Orc and Centaur tribes that call Brodnak Flat their home. Thanks to its location near the middle of the region, it has become the main trading hub for the various clans. Although the clans rarely have artisans, the Orcs are renowned as the best horse tamers in Morgrave, and frequently sell extra horses, which usually go on to be some noble's racing horse or warhorse somewhere else in Qemt'Or or beyond. The Skulls Dwarves far to the east are known as excellent crafters and artisans, but they rarely travel out to Bigwall; there are smaller trading posts in the foothills that soak up most of the trade from the Dwarves.
