Firbolg

Always an Outsider

Firbolgs, known as Drifters to the rest of the world, are tall, bulky, lightly furry humanoids with long ears; flat, broad noses; and wide, friendly grins. Their fur color is usually brown, blue or green, or a blend of two or all three of those colors; most Firbolgs have monochromatic coats. Their skin underneath the fur varies widely, from tan, to black, to blue, and even to red. They are taller than a human, standing usually at 7 to 8 feet and being bulkier by proportion to boot.   Firbolgs live outside of settled lands. They live in nature, finding beauty in the natural world, and are spread out around the world. Some clans stay in a specific area in settled towns, but most drift around the world in brightly colored caravans to see everything the world has to offer. Because they rarely make contact with settled races (usually only to trade), they are often blamed for anything that goes wrong within a week of them passing through. A pot went missing? Must have been the Drifters. An old lady died? Must have been a Drifter curse.

A Spiritual Resilience

Firbolgs believe that their spirit is tested by hardship, and that stoically overcoming a challenge or a threat is the only way to improve oneself; they get the same satisfaction from weathering a brutal storm or calming down a vicious wolf as they do from surviving the harangues of angry, ignorant villagers. Firbolgs rarely complain, and when they do it's more of a lament that things couldn't have gone better.   In line with their love of nature and their own willingness to suffer through problems, most Firbolg clans are pacifist, though individuals in each clan are allowed to make up their own mind. Pacifism, however, is not to be mistaken with non-violent. Most Firbolgs eat a balanced diet and train with weapons at a young age to hunt their own food. Additionally, a large percentage of Firbolgs would not hesitate to defend their people from a sudden attack, though they would rather talk it out if at all possible. A small portion would even fight to save their property, though a majority would abandon it rather than shed blood.

Drifter by name, Drifter by nature

Only a handful of Firbolg clans have made a permanent settlement, and a majority of those clans encourage young Firbolgs to travel the world when they reach adulthood. Nearly all the clans travel in caravans of colorful covered wagons, never staying in one place for too long. Some clans may feel most at home in the forests, some in the grasslands, and some have even set up a fleet of ships around the Cauldron, which has much safer waters than the rest of the coastlines of Morgrave.   Firbolgs are by far the best travelled of all the kith, so they come into contract with other settlements often. Some merchants hire Firbolg caravans to transport goods to other places, but this comes with some caveats. For instance, Firbolg caravans are notoriously slow because they might stop in a particularly nice grove or grotto for a while. However, if speed is not a priority, most merchants rely on Firbolgs for reliable transport of goods. Firbolgs accept these jobs as a "fun" way to decide where to take the caravan next and for a modest income in case their property needs repairs that they can't fix on their own.

Mistrusted by Other Kith

But besides merchants, most other kith, especially superstitious villagers, are wary of Firbolgs. Bad things seem to happen when the Drifters pass through. Things might go missing, pets might disappear, and people might die. These villagers know better than the trust the Drifters, and the Firbolgs are seldom welcome in villages and small towns. In reality, Firbolgs are rarely the cause of these problems; usually the villagers are simply mistaken, or sometimes a wily criminal might plan his crimes for when the Firbolgs pass through. Inevitably, word spreads and kith become even more distrusting of the Drifters.   This mistrust is primarily one-way. A great majority of Firbolgs look at these villagers as simply misguided - most hold them no resentment and some are even happy to be a scapegoat to let the villagers vent their frustrations on. It's rare for a Firbolg to leave their clan, and even rarer for them to move to a town or city. Most cannot handle 'civilized' life - it feels so stagnant to them - but some have done it. Likewise, very few other kith end up with Firbolgs, but when they do, the Firbolgs tend to welcome them with open arms. It's seen as a sign that the other kith are finally understanding the true meaning of life - not industry, but harmony with nature.

Blessed by Artemis

Every few hundred years or so, a Firbolg druid is born. This individual is characterized by having shapechanging abilities and a special connection to a specific part of nature. When this ability is discovered in a young Firbolg they are dubbed a "chosen one" and, when they are old enough, are sent to visit every single Firbolg clan to spread their wisdom so it can be passed down to future generations. Thanks to this tradition, every Firbolg knows the teachings of all past druids by heart.
"Emotion can be the enemy.
If you give into emotion,
you lose yourself.
You must be at one with your emotion,
because the body always follows the mind."
- Brusli, Druid of the Moon, considered the mother of Firbolg stoicism.

Names

Firbolg names are often coarse and guttural, much like their language. There is no distinction between male and female names. Firbolgs do not have last names, but they have been known to make them up when dealing with other kith who cannot fathom someone having a last name. These made up last names might be in Firbolg, Common, or a local language. Firbolgs see names as a necessity, but do not see them as "personally identifying", exactly - so, many Firbolgs have fun changing their names on a regular basis.   Names: Alsvartr, Aurvandil, Bergelmir, Blothughadda, Eistla, Gjalth, Hrimgrimnir, Mjoll, Nari, Svivor, Thryvaldi, Ulfrun, Vasuthr, Ymsi
