Kraaka
Ocean travel is one of - if not the most - dangerous activities in Morgrave. Sea monster attacks are not uncommon, especially once you get into a deeper and/or colder waters. However, Qemti and especially Kracki, living close to the warm and shallow The Cauldron, have been slowly developing new ships to survive the oceans of Morgrave.
The two greatest threats to ships are sea monsters and pirates. Sea monsters need to be outrun - nothing has been developed yet that could take more than a couple of hits from a fully grown sea monster. Pirates, however, can be fought. Since pirates rarely travel too far from their island bases, their ships are quite durable, as they don't often meet sea monsters. As a result, new ships need to be both faster and more durable than their predecessors.
The kraaka is the latest in slow-moving naval technology. Developed by the Krachi, it is an improvement over the klinka, a broad hulled, flat boat. The kraaka built on the klinka by making the hull deeper, allowing it to hold more cargo, and by adding "towers" to the back and sometimes front of the ship, from which archers could more easily take cover and fire their arrows at attacking pirates. The kraaka, being deep of hull, is stable enough to have three large masts as well, making it quicker than its predecessor. Finally, most kraakas are built with abutting panels of wood, which is heavier but more protective and more stable for the extra weight of the masts. Overall, the kraaka is both faster and more durable than the klinka. Its invention has increased the viability of trade in the cauldron and beyond, making seafaring overall much more common around the world (although still extremely dangerous).
