Session 1 - First Steps Into Runswick

General Summary

When last we left our heroes...

Marcel Whitroar had planned to meet up with his bros Trickles and Arindorf at the Southern Gates of Runswick. They were joined by Glitz Glitz Glam and Flaar, who had traveled with Trickles and Arindorf into the city.   After chatting for a while and making introductions, the group was approached by one of the city guards who asked them to move out of the road as they were starting to impede traffic. While polite to Marcel and Trickles, whom he clearly knew, he was hostile and suspicious towards Flaar as a tiefling. Marcel offered to buy breakfast for the group at The Crying Mermaid, a local tavern.   At the Mermaid, the group chowed down on eggs and bacon, and got to know one another a little better. Those who knew Ariel Sebastian, the proprietor of the Mermaid, could tell she wasn't doing so well. Trickles attempted to cheer her up, while Glitz approached her and privately learned that her son Eric Jr was missing. Glitz was hired to be on the case and find the missing youth. (Author's Note: While out-of-character all of the players know this information, in-character only Glitz knows about Eric Jr's disappearance.)   As Glitz made her way back to the table, Marcel got the attention of the group and explained that something is not right in Runswick. Over the past few months, people have been disappearing (mostly young adults between the ages of 16-25), and at the same time rumors of a death cult somewhere in or around Runswick have been surfacing. Marcel asked the group to join him in investigating the situation, and let them know that he hopes to gain an audience with King Elrin soon. His friend Korrin Firhound, Captain of the Guards, has told him that he could most likely get an audience with the king if he stopped by the palace today or tomorrow.   It was still early morning as the group left the Mermaid, and they spent some time debating what to do next. Flaar was only interested in heading to a magic shop in town he'd heard about called The Violet Tome, and stubbornly insisted on going there even if it meant going alone. The party was concerned about leaving the tiefling by himself in an unknown and potentially hostile city, so eventually a compromise was reached. They would all briefly stop by the shop before heading to the palace together.   At The Violet Tome, Arindorf waited outside to stand watch while the rest of the group went inside the tiny shop. Trickles eventually was able to coerce Ursula Goodwitch into revealing the secret back room full of slightly suspect magic items, but ultimately the party didn't leave with anything other than Trickles' purchase of a rusty dagger that may or may not be magical depending on if he can figure out the "magic word."   It is mid-morning when the group exits The Violet Tome to meet up with Arindorf and make their way to the Runswick Palace.

10 Elient, evening   Tomorrow I am meeting two good friends at the Southern Gates. While it will be wonderful to see Trickles and Arindorf again, my main concern is one of business. I can only hope they will join me in investigating the disappearances and potential death cult that seems to be infecting this beautiful city.   I must confess I am worried. I hope against hope that all of this can be explained away, that nothing untoward is happening, that Jamal –   No. I must not give into despairing thoughts. Tomorrow will come, and we will get to the crux of this. Selûne, give me strength, fortitude, and illuminate my way.   -From the personal logbook of Marcel Whitroar

The Short Version

The party met one another at the southern gates of Runswick, had breakfast at The Crying Mermaid (where Glitz was secretly hired by Ariel Sebastian to find her missing son, Eric Jr), and stopped by The Violet Tome. Marcel Whitroar revealed to the group that he is concerned about a number of disappearances that have occurred in Runswick, as well as rumors of a death cult somewhere in or around the city. Marcel hopes to gain an audience with King Elrin sometime today or tomorrow, and asked his new friends to help him with the investigation.   We will jump back into the story mid-morning, as the group emerges from The Violet Tome, and begins making their way towards the palace.
