Session 6 - Into the Deep

General Summary

When Last We Left Our Heroes...

The battle was over and the party was finally able to take the time to get to know their new companion, a dragonborn named Slappa DaBass. "We're glad you're okay now," said Glitz, patting the dragonborn on the shoulder. "Do you know anything about the cultists down here? Or what's going on?"   Slappa explained to the group that he was part of the clan of Nadarr, but several months ago, he woke up in a cell with many other dragonborn - nearly the entire clan. The tribal elders weren't in prison with him, but were being kept somewhere else. A person named Norath Pyloth had told them that the entire clan was captured, and unless they did what they were told they would sacrifice them to their dark god. The captured dragonborn have been forced into hard labor, with most villagers in a large cage excavating a huge dragon skeleton.   Then Arindorf, who had been exploring in the southern hallway, called everyone over as he found an empty room with a row of hooks bearing ceremonial robes on one wall, a bunch of crates - and a staircase leading down into the castle depths.   The party decided to put on robes to disguise themselves a bit before traveling further. Trickles smashed through the crates and found an assortment of items, including a very fabulous hat, which Glitz added to her ensemble, and a very magical Bass Lute of Chaos, which Slappa slung over his shoulder. Then, as Trickles went poking his way around the entire room, he noticed that all of the hooks had robes on them - except for one. He carefully pulled on that hook, and suddenly a secret passage was revealed.   The party took a minute to look through all the passageways on this level and found that the secret passage connected the room they were in with the preparation room they had been in before. They also discovered a second staircase at the end of the west passage heading down. Before heading down into the deep in earnest, the group decided to rest and regroup for a few minutes. Slappa played the Lute of Chaos to attempt a restful song, but unfortunately something went wrong and everyone ended up taking damage.   Rested and (sort of) recharged, the party set out down the smaller, winding staircase, Marcel lighting the way with his glowing mace. At the bottom of the stairs, the adventurers found themselves in a large library with bookshelves along the side walls that reached to the ceiling, with giant sliding ladders on each. Trickles immediately jumped on a ladder and slid down the room with an excitable "wheeeee!" In the shadows, a large dragonborn skeleton drew a sword - and came lumbering towards the party.   Flaar and Arindorf leapt into action, as Flaar cast a chill touch onto the bones and Arindorf pulled his shortsword and sliced the skeleton clean in two, as the magic holding it together dissipated and it collapsed onto the floor. Shaken from the exchange, the group expressed condolences to Slappa, who revealed that he had seen skeletons like this wandering around before - and every few nights one or more dragonborn seem to disappear from the cells. Flaar examined the skeleton, surprised and a little impressed, knowing that it was very difficult to magically reanimate any dragonkind species. Slappa also mentioned that he had heard there were some dragonborn being sent to look for two great relics - the The Bone Wand and black gem. "The gem that Flaar picked up," Marcel remarked. "Hopefully it's safe inside that little dude who follows you."   Arindorf carefully listened at the door leading to the next room, and while he didn't hear anything, the door was locked. Glitz pulled out her thieves' tools and started picking the lock (after getting a high five and moral support from Trickles, of course). Flaar took that time to look through all of the books - which quickly crumbled into dust as he touched them or appeared completely blank. But amidst all the dust and fakeness, he did find three mysterious spell scrolls of an unknown origin.   Just then, Glitz popped open the lock and the party filed into another room of the same size of the library. Torches burned on the walls in a very fancy bedroom complete with silk sheets on the bed, gold trimmed furnishings, art on the walls, and a dragonborn skeleton. Wait, a dragonborn skeleton??!?!   It took the entire group to bring the skeleton down, with everyone getting in a hit (except poor Glitz, who slid in, missed, and tumbled into Trickles with an "I'm sorry Tricklllllleeees!" Slappa got in the destroying blow with a borrowed shortsword, as the skeleton collapsed into a mere pile of bones.   The group looked around the room, finding interesting treasures to take and trade. Slappa found some studded leather armor in the closet (which he put on), along with high priestly robes (which Flaar immediately switched into). Glitz grabbed some gold cord off a drapery and tied it around her waist as a belt. Trickles wrapped a silk pillowcase around his neck like a cape, and found a gold music box that looked like it was worth some coin. Arindorf swiped a jeweled wine goblet that had been sitting on the nightstand.   Bedecked and bejewled, the party carefully went through the next unlocked door, and found themselves in a well lit hallway that turned to the left before hitting a dead end. Trickles found a suspicious brick, pressed on it, and the stone door slid open revealing a much wider, well-lit, and longer hallway heading south. At the end of the hall stood another wide staircase leading up, and halfway down the hall another hallway branched to the east. Speculating that the wider staircase was the same one they had seen the top of on the higher levels, the party turned the corner to the east. There they saw a very long hall, with two doors at the far end and a human guard standing in front of a series of cells.   Knowing they needed the element of surprise (let's be honest; they definitely didn't look like actual cultists anymore), Flaar cast Thaumaturgy to take out the torchlights in the hallway. Arindorf immediately turned into a bear, and Trickles and Marcel rushed forward and took out the guard together.   Marcel looked into the cells, shining the light of the WaveRider mace as far as it could reach. He couldn't see much because of the angles, but could just make out a larger cavernous room with cells on either side.   Trickles searched the guard and found the key that opened up the cell door. The group filed in, with Arindorf BEAR-ly fitting through the door and Trickles standing watch at the entrance. They saw a large room, with prison cells around all the edges. Inside each cell stood between two to five dragonborn. And Slappa immediately recognized them as people from his village.

The Short Version

The party got to know their new dragonborn companion, Slappa DaBass, and learned that he was a part of the group of Village of Nadarr captives, the rest of who were still being held somewhere in the keep. The group thoroughly explored the level they were on, put on cultist robes for disguises, took a brief rest, and found a set of staircases that led them down further into the deep. Once down on the next level, they made their way through a lavish library and bedroom, each with a dragonborn skeleton that had to be defeated, and then down another long hallway where they found a guard standing in front of a large set of cells, and quickly dispatched him.   We will jump back into the story as our heroes peer into the darkness of the cells, wondering what they will find within their depths.
