Storm Singers

The call of the sea is stronger in some than others. Storms rage, beckoning those with lightning in their blood, the sea in their bones. Some are struck by this lightning, a siren song that fills their hearts. Drawn to this siren’s call, the Storm Singers find themselves in service to Mellan, Goddess of Sea and Storms.
The Storm Singers are sought out to act as a guide, their magic helping guide the ship unerringly through storms and rough seas. The creatures of the deep do not seek the vessel that bears them, and the winds always blow in their favor. Should a ship carrying a Storm Singer come under attack, the Singer can call the aid of sea monsters to turn the tides of battle to their favor. They walk over the seas, or beneath the waves as needed, and shall not fear the loss of breath.
As the Singer calls upon the powers granted by Mellan, a mark, visible even through clothing, glows upon their skin. This gift gives the Singer powers over the breezes that blow and the waves crashing upon the shores. Every Singer is gifted with this mark upon achieving Mellan's approval.

Appointment

Appointment as a Storm Singer is a gift from Mellan herself. Often the Singer finds themselves drawn to storms on the sea, squalls that most sailors would avoid. The Storm Singer will leave the ship they are on, rowing into the middle of the raging storm, their faith in Mellan the only thing to aid them. This faith is shown through songs, poems, or stories which are performed during the storm. The very brave dance through the storm, risking a fall into the sea. Should the Storm Singer's faith prove true, they will come out through the other side of the storm marked with Mellan's Trident.
Those whose faith waivers do not make it to the clear skys and calm seas. It is unkown what happens to the faithless. Some say the sea claims them during the storm, while others say that Mellan's wrath at those who break faith comes in the form of a sea monster.

Duties

Storm Singers are gifted the ability to guide and protect ships through storms and from monsters of the deep. There are areas of oceans on Mortheg which are nearly impossible to sail through without the blessing of a Storm Singer. Sea monsters that would destroy ships and consume the sailors in the wreckage are driven off by, or avoid altogether, Storm Singers.

Tumultuous Seas
Some areas of Mortheg's oceans are nigh-on impassible without the assistance of a Sea Singer. It is said if a ship can make it through the Tumultuous Sea and come out the other side intact, Mellan places a special blessing upon it and the remaining crew, claiming them for herself.
