The Aerinsithe Family
"We - the Aerinsithes, that is - are a unique breed, I think. We're plagued with demons you can't even imagine - and I mean that quite literally - and we're stuck fast in our crown and throne. I don't think we could stop being royalty, not if we tried, not really; we promised the spirits, we were given the centre core specifically for this, and I don't want to imagine what would happen if we went back on that. I'm haunted by ghosts that had their eyes on me long before I was even born." - Swan AerinsitheA family of power, of close ties and blood, famy and infamy, ruling Mosin for centuries and perhaps centuries more to come. Chosen to rule and created with a special power by the spirits themselves, the Aerinsithes have managed to stay in power despite opposition and coups and civil wars plaguing the history of Mosin, and reputations ranging from praise to cursing.
Structure
"The first thing you should know about being the Heir, Renegade, is that it's a pain in the ass. If you're not perfect, you've failed. If you are perfect, you've still failed. You have the eyes of our family on you, the eyes of the Compound, the eyes on the entire world. Don't mess it up." - Erwin AerinsitheThe Aerinsithes follow the same structure as all families in Mosin, except with the addition they have royalty related roles such as Emperor.
- The Emperor - the head of the family, any gender (the term "emperor" is used gender neutrally in their world), and in addition the head of the state. The crown is inherited from parent to eldest child. If the current emperor finds themself dying without children, the crown would then move to a sibling and their children, and so on. The current emperor, for the most part, would be in possession of the centre core. Famous Emperors have included:
- Aerin Briar, their founder
- Dameis Aerinsithe, Aerin's daughter
- Dyuvitris Aerinsithe who is credited for the beginning of the Purishan Age
- Avsey Aerinsithe, Dyuvitris's great-great-great grandson, credited to being the first Aerinsithe Emperor to go against the Purishan Age and work for it's end
- Radio Aerinsithe, who had to deal with her infamous and traitorous younger brother in an era of great turmoil
- Karel Aerinsithe, known for having succumbed to the centre core's powers
- Crocus Aerinsithe, his daughter and the last Emperor before the Oleander Rising
- Swan Aerinsithe, the Boy King, the son of Crocus, both famous and infamous
- Bryarus Aerinsithe, who much like Karel succumbed to his powers and ended up being killed by his own family after he murdered a political opponent and started one of the bloodiest wars in history
- Roya Aerinsithe, daughter of Bryarus, and the first Aerinsithe Emperor to rule in times of The Division
- Kristav Aerinsithe, son of Roya
- Erwin Aerinsithe, eldest daughter of Kristav, The Red Hawk, The Blood Emperor, the last Emperor to live solely in the Division
- Renegade Aerinsithe, the only son of Erwin, a rebel true to his name, one of the key players in ending the Division; he ascended the throne at only age 18.
- Appointed Elders - generally the heads of each different branch of the family. Elder members, known for their wisdom and leadership, they're voted in by all eligible adults to this position of authority. In non-royal families, they'd be at the head of the house, but in the Aerinsithes they answer to the emperor. The appointed elders represent and lead the family in both public and private coming and goings. While there are many, many examples, some examples are:
- Tatiana Aerinsithe, known for her legendary wisdom
- Florence Aerinsithe, a niece of Emperor Bryarus who got stranded in hostile areas during the beginning of the Division; when she came home, she ended up being essential to the movements of the Aerinsithes
- Jacqui Aerinsithe, the younger twin sister of Emperor Erwin, called The Magpie, a brilliant and altruistic micromanager and one of the six Birds (the most influential and powerful players of their time)
- The Heir - the Aerinsithe next in line to receive both the crown and the centre core, generally the Emperor's eldest child. The Heir is again a rank special to the Aerinsithes, much like the Emperor. Raised to be the future ruler, the Heir has more responsibilities and duties than the average family member and the rest of the Aerinsithes and nation rely on them to take up the crown when it is their time. There are not too many examples of famous Heirs, as most have ended up Emperor. Some exceptions, however, are:
- Pieri Aerinsithe, the Heir to his mother (the Emperor Neven Aerinsithe), died when he was 21 in a massacre that killed many Aerinsithes and left his first cousin - fourth child of Pieri's uncle Orivon Aerinsithe - Dyuvitris to take the crown.
- Olexa Aerinsithe, eldest son of Emperor Moscan Aerinsithe, murdered in another massacre, leaving the throne to his younger brother Avsey
- Dara Aerinsithe, son of Emperor Crocus, the elder brother of Emperor Swan, a boy who tragically died when he was only 13, leaving his 8-year-old brother to take up the crown when it was time (which ended up only being seven years later, when Crocus died with Swan being only age 15).
- Established Adults - like the appointed elders, established adults is a rank universal to all families. It simply includes members of the family who have been legally adults for at least a couple years, and have had time to experience life as an adult and partake in their share of responsibilities and duties. They are the average adult in the family, albeit with more representational and leadership privileges than young adults. They are eligible to partake in votes and formal discussions within the family.
- Simone Aerinsithe, the elder brother of Bleu Aerinsithe and third cousin to Emperor Avenir Aerinsithe, famous for his relentless and ruthless pursuit of Bleu after his sibling's defection
- Yuliy Aerinsithe, famous for their scientific advancements in the years leading up to the Purishan Age
- Avdonin Aerinsithe, the younger bastard half-sister of Olexa and Avsey Aerinsithe
- Hana Aerinsithe, the younger brother of Crocus, well-known due to the Oleander Uprising and his participation in killing his mad father with Crocus
- Sunny Aerinsithe, second cousin of Swan and Dara Aerinsithe, magicless, survived the initial massacres of the Oleander Uprising and played a key role in beginning rebellions, which eventually died
- Hamsha Aerinsithe, the third sibling of the Elva Ozolins/Kristav Aerinsithe children. Younger brother of Erwin and Jacqui Aerinsithe, elder brother of five more siblings. Known for his role in the Division
- Mercedenes (Mercedes) Aerinsithe, younger sister of Erwin, Jacqui and Hamsha Aerinsithe, again known for her role in the Division
- Fletcher Aerinsithe, the second youngest of the Elva Ozolins/Kristav Aerinsithe children, elder brother of his twin Revolver Aerinsithe. Like his siblings Hamsha and Mercedes, known for his role during the Division
- Scabior Aerinsithe, only daughter of Erwin Aerinsithe and Jon Haedor, younger sister of Emperor Renegade Aerinsithe, originally thought to have been killed at age three, again known for her role in the Division
- New Adults - again, a rank shared by all families across Mosin. They are the young ones, the fledglings, new to being an adult and fully functioning member of society. Due to this, they do not share the same responsibilities and privileges as established adults; instead, they're given time to fully transition from being a child to an adult and learn their place in the family. They are eligible to partake in votes and formal discussions within the family. Due to the fact most grow up to be established adults, there are few examples of well-known new adults who died before ranking up. A couple examples that do exist are:
- Rose Aerinsithe, who died at 19 years old, the younger sister of Simone and Bleu Aerinsithe
- Sniper Aerinsithe, the sister of Kristav Aerinsithe, died when she was 20 years old (ironically sniped).
- Children - including both little kids and teenagers, they are the future of the family and raised in a joint effort by the entire family. While they do chores and other typical duties, they do not have the responsibilities and duties of an adult, unless of course they are the Heir. They are not eligible to partake in votes and formal discussions within the family, unless it is a time of emergency and the child in question is at least fourteen years of age. Like new adults, examples of children are rarer because they required dying young. There are, however, some examples:
- Korovin Aerinsithe, first cousin of Swan Aerinsithe, died at age fifteen in the initial massacre during the Oleander Uprising
- Irina Aerinsithe, first cousin of Swan Aerinsithe, died at age thirteen in one of the initial massacres during the Oleander Uprising
- Dezi Aerinsithe, second cousin of Swan Aerinsithe, died at age fourteen during the initial massacre of the Oleander Uprising
- Nike Aerinsithe, second cousin of Swan Aerinsithe, died at age sixteen again during the initial massacre of the Oleander Uprising
- Cooper Aerinsithe, second cousin of Swan Aerinsithe, died at age fourteen once again during the initial massacre of the Oleander Uprising.
- Suspended Members - a rank found in all families (though not always used), suspended members include those who have done something to be frowned upon, and bad enough to be suspended. Suspension is basically being half-way disowned, but are still considered part of their family. While they have duties, such as helping out with taking care of children, they aren't eligible to vote or partake in formal discussions. They do not represent the family and have little power until they are either unsuspended or completely disowned. There have been notable Aerinsithes suspended at one point or another:
- Amelin Aerinsithe, a cousin of Olexa, Avsey and Avdonin Aerinsithe, suspended for betraying her family to join rebels protesting against the classist and violent nature of the Aerinsithes during the Purishan Age
- Revolver Aerinsithe, the youngest brother of Erwin, Jacqui, Hamsha, Mychel, Sven , Mercedes, and Fletcher Aerinsithe, the last son of Elva Ozolins and Kristav Aerinsithe. At age 18, Revolver along with Kitty Essen, Jazz Essen and Aswyn Daslin ran away and went into hiding with some children - including the Heir, Renegade - to protect them from the war, violence, and early deaths that were quite common. Due to his defection that went against Erwin, Revolver was suspended when found seven years later (when Renegade was 12 years old)
- Disowned Members - while still allowed to hold the family name (many do not, however), they are not considered part of the family and are quite often shunned and ignored. While it's not so uncommon for members to suspended, complete disownment is quite rare and only happens in severe cases. In the Aerinsithes particularly, this rarely happens with one of the only famous examples being that of:
- Bleu Aerinsithe, a runaway and defector who's plight later became famous, disowned by the current Emperor Andrusha Aerinsithe
- Marlen Aerinsithe, an infamous mass murderer and younger brother of the Emperor Radio Aerinsithe; was hunted down and killed by his sister after long indecision due to Radio's love for her brother.
Public Agenda
"This is our duty; our responsibility. It's what we're born for, what we're made for, the whole reason we became the Aerinsithes in the beginning." - Crocus AerinsitheWhile specific goals will change and differ through the centuries, the core purpose of the Aerinsithes remain the same; to rule Mosin. It is, quite literally, what the family was created for. The Emperor is sworn to maintain peace and unity within their people, to protect them and serve them. At times the family's new agenda will come in conflict with this primary purpose: in the Purishan Age, Emperor Dyuvitris and his descendents maintained a rigid, classist agenda which waged war on poorer parts of the world and forced perfection onto society and the members of their own family. And then there is the case of the infamous Bryarus, emperor until the members of his family were driven to kill him for the sake of Mosin. With a severe lack of control of himself and the powers that come with the centre core, with tensions rising between different political movements Bryarus found the best solution to be was to murder his biggest opposer, causing outrage that escalated into decades long world war, the bloodiest in history. Erwin Aerinsithe, descendant of Bryarus - his great granddaughter - who ruled a split world, with her people primarily scattered in hiding. The Aerinsithes of her time were focused on the goal of not only finishing and winning the war, but reuniting the world under the rule of their family. These are but a few examples of many; with constanting changing Emperor's and their different motivation and goals, the public agenda of the Aerinsithes can differ greatly from generation to generation even if their core purpose of ruling remains the same.
Assets
"This is the Silver Parliament, home to Emperor Dove Eira. It used to belong to the Aerinsithes, for as long as they ruled, but they've fled to the Compound during this war. Better works as a military base, I think, I'm not sure really. I'm no expert on the Aerinsithe's decisions. But even if they claim this belongs to the Eira's now - and you didn't hear this from me - we all know it still really just is the Aerinsithes." - Rica EllenezIt is only traditional in Mosin for families to hold onto assets and heirlooms; unlike our world, where the individual is more important than the family, in Mosin the family is culturally seen as the most important thing. A family isn't made up of individuals - rather, a individual is simply a shard of the family. Traditions, history, artifacts: everything making up the family's identity is heavily protected and revered. The Aerinsithes are no exception, and with their fame, status and power their assets are even more significant. Some of the of the primary ones include;
- Control of Mosin - the Aerinsithe's foremost asset is their power and control. They rule directly and with power as head of state in the nation of North Mosin (and South Mosin, before the splitting of the country) alongside an elected government, and rule the rest of the Mosin (the name both of a country and the entire planet), albeit to a lesser extent. All other nations have their own governments, and often their own monarchy (using the titles "king" and "queen" rather than emperor the Aerinsithes are automatically an important part of these governments as well as being considered the co-royalty, though they do not have as much power.
- The Silver Parliament - one of the most obvious and famous examples is that of the Silver Parliament, the traditional home of the Aerinsithes. Set in the heart of the city of Savvin - the official capital of the nation of North Mosin and unofficially considered the capital of Mosin/the world in general, as well as the biggest and oldest city - the Silver Parliament functions as a combination of a palace, guest rooms for visiting officials, the government's centre and a convention centre. It is, after all, called the Silver Parliament. With the first couple floors being for visitors and conventions, the middle floors being a mix of guest rooms and government related areas, and the last floors dedicated to the Aerinsithes, the looming building watches over Savvin.
- The Aerinsithe Treasury - despite being the most powerful family, with the exception of the Purishan Age the Aerinsithes have never been incredibly wealthy, due to the fact a significant number of their wealth is circulated back to the people. This tax imposed on them - and the other of the richest families - was created by Emperor Avsey Aerinsithe in order to stop situations such as the Purishan Age from occurring again. Still, the Aerinsithes do have a sizeable vault, with many treasures hidden inside.
- The Compound - after the beginning of the Division, the Aerinsithes and their supporters either fled to the giant underground city of Sempiternal, fled to the smaller nations of Kecrea, Ariner and Estia, went into hiding in their traditional homes, or joined the Aerinsithes at the compound and surrounding areas. The Compound is a partially above ground, partially underground, giant military base created years ago. The surrounding areas are protected by a mountain range with outposts; the compound is situated in a valley nearby Savvin and surrounding areas. Due to the military disadvantages of staying in the Silver Parliament - and not wishing to cause collateral damage on the citizens there - Emperor Roya Aerinsithe decided to evacuate to the Compound instead.
- Sempiternal - a giant underground city located in the Crown Mountains, a remnant of ages past before the Aerinsithes even existed. When the Aerlyn - the frozen, inhabited north pole and tundra north of the Crown Mountains - was slowly evacuated, so was Sempiternal until it was completely except to the Aerinsithes. A secret passed on through the years, the gates were opened during the Division to house refugees under the rule of the Aerinsithes.
- The Crown of Aerin (Aerin's Crown) - a simple, thin band of silver, fashioned to look like a tendril of thorns and briars. This was the crown first created for the Emperor, fashioned for their founder Aerin himself. It is traditionally worn by the Emperor, though only on formal and state occasions like all crowns.
- The Crown of Dameis (Dameis's Crown) - the second crown belonging to the Aerinsithes, it is even simpler than Aerin's Crown: three thin silver tendrils wound together. The crown was made for Aerin's daughter and successor, Dameis, when she was still the Heir rather than Emperor and is still traditionally worn by the Heir for formal and state occasions.
- The Royal Guard - their name deceives the intent of the Royal Guard; while they do, in fact, guard, their main purpose is to act as the primary army dedicated to the Aerinsithes. While the size and efficiency changes overtime, it's widely recognized that the Royal Guard is one of the most terrifyingly competent and well trained ones out there.
- Anahnu's Heart - a small core, taken from the spirit of life Anahnu themself. In the ancient legend of the first twins - Anahnu and Annuska, life and death (and together, the fabrication of time itself) - Anahnu betrayed their twin, who was driven by their hurt and rage as well as the whisperings of other spirits to confront and kill Anahnu. Annuska's core (or, for spirits, their "heart") was inside Anahnu and vice versa, and in the drowning of Anahnu's physical form Annuska split their own core (which was within Anahnu) into three pieces and ripped Anahnu's core out of themself. While often considered an irrelevant legend - despite the vast majority of Mosin believing in the spirits and the ones who do not being considered odd - the cores found their way to the physical world, with Aerin Briar finding Anahnu's core and fashioning a necklace out of it. The necklace is considered a talisman to protect the Aerinsithe's, particularly the current emperor; the centre core is a gate for spirits attempting to make their way into the physical world, making the centre core and its powers incredibly unstable and dangerous and Anahnu's Heart helps protect from that.
History
"Your history, your family, can and will never be forgotten, Renegade. The Aerinsithes are a power and memory to behold - they've seared their name onto time itself. You may have started from my blood, from the blood of the Briars and Fletchers, but the Aerinsithes have burned their own path." - Alexeis BriarThe history of the Aerinsithes is both a long one and a complicated one. From their beginnings with Aerin, to their future with the descendants of Renegade, each step taking by the family will remain to be scrutinized and remembered for years to come.
The Twins
"The plight of the twins are far more important than anyone seems to have realized. Their fight - and the death of Anahnu's physical form - imbalanced the powers of life and death. As long as you live, as long as anyone lives, the world will be directly affected by the consequences of their actions, and unless they are to be restored, this world will be torn apart by time itself." - EveThe roots of the Aerinsithes begin long before the family even had their name, before life was the way we know it. It started with Anahnu's betrayal, and Annuska's murder of their twin. When the spirit of life's physical form was drowned, and spirit form eternally trapped in the waters where they died, Annuska in their twisted and incomplete form fled from the wrath of the other spirits. Sor, leader of the spirits, made the decision for all spirits to retreat from the physical world; their power was too great, and they couldn't risk any more catastrophes such as the death of Anahnu. They changed the forms of their creations - lifeforms - so that they could still access life, through water where Anahnu remained trapped. And they gave the apple of their eye, the best creation, humans, the power of cores. These were shards of the spirits themselves, embedded as an organ in each human allowing them to access and control magic (with the exception of those who had medical conditions which blocked the core from working properly, thus rendering them magicless). The cores also acted as gates for spirits to pass through, with the stronger cores being much more unstable and easy to corrupt than weaker ones. And two of the most powerful magics were those of the twins, of manipulating life and death.
Era of the North
"Alexeis, I love you more than anything. You are the centre of my universe, my everything - and that's almost definitely not healthy but whatever - but I can't - I won't - watch you, you and Damien, destroy everything and everyone. I guess you really are blind to this, but you're tearing apart our world." - Corphelia BriarWhile in the Age of the Ancients there were no centre cores, eventually as the spirits slowly left they condensed until one centre core - the connection of the physical world to the spirit world - was created, albeit in six pieces. When a holder of a piece of the centre core died, it would be inherited by someone new. In these times, ancient families known as the Dov Clans ruled, with their strength situated in the North: the Aerlyn, still inhabited, and the Evendor. The most most powerful families were those of the Briars and the Fletchers, forever allies and the two sides of one coin. Nearing the end of the Era of the North, two young rulers came in power; Alexeis Briar, with the earth shard of the centre core, and Damien Fletcher with the death shard of the centre core. Unbeknownst to them, the younger identical twin sister of Alexeis - Corphelia (Coro) Briar held the life shard of the centre core, which had thought to been lost or the holder just a baby. When driven by partially his ambitions and partially by Annuska to start a campaign on the other clans - one that'd tear the world apart, quite literally - due to a complicated circumstances of events, Damien ended up dead, his wife Alexeis devastated and widowed, and Corphelia with both Damien's centre core shard and her own. With the two most dangerous cores safely stowed inside of her, Coro bargained with Sor and the spirits to have the rest of the shards condensed into one unified and much less unstable centre core, one which would be passed down from parent to child with the exception of the death and life cores. And that first child was the son of Alexeis Briar and Damien Fletcher: Aerin.
The Aerinsithe's Bloom
"You are the first of your line, Aerin. We can't have Briars ruling, or Fletchers, or any of us. We need a new start, a fresh start, and that's what you're here for. What the Aerinsithes will be for." - Corphelia BriarAnd thus a new era began: the Aerinsithe's Bloom. Due to dangers of his origins, Aerin and his aunt Coro erased his family history of Briar and Fletcher to instead form a new family, that of the Aerinsithes. While Aerin's daughter Dameis was officially the first to use the last name Aerinsithe, Aerin himself is still considered the founder. The family wasn't meant to be the rulers either, at first; until the spirits decided so, decreeing the Aerinsithe's rights as rulers. The ascension to the throne still wasn't easy, with many laughing in the face of Aerin. To his credit, he never faltered nor attacked with military power, preferring not to follow his parents' footsteps. Deciding on the newly built Silver Parliament in the centre of the rather new (in comparison to the Dov Clans' settlements and Sempiternal) city of Savvin, Aerin established his throne and crown which was later passed onto his daughter Dameis - equally peaceful and diplomatic - and then his granddaughter Yu, and so on. The first generations passed by for the most part smoothly, with the retreat from the Aerlyn and Sempiternal leaving them a deserted no-man's land (with the exception of Coro Briar, who remained there with the spirit-imprints of her deceased loved ones (when any creature with a soul dies, they automatically become their own form of spirit in the spirit world which doubles as a corrupted - due to the twins plight - afterlife)). The populations instead began to populate the rest of Mosin to a greater extent, with large groups establishing themselves in places such as Mamirez.
The First Loscan Wars
"I couldn't - I can't - stay here, Simone. Rose understood, Avenir understands, Artemy and Arseni and Amvrosy and Pavel all understand. Why can't you? You're my own brother, after all. All Andrusha is bringing with his reign is violence and bloodshed, and I have no life there. I had no life there. I can't, I won't, come back with you no matter how hard you try or how much Andrusha and the elders disown me." - Bleu AerinsitheThe first quite major conflicts since all the constant wars plaguing the Era of the North were the first Loscan wars. Huge, bloody, and infamous, they followed the invasion of the monarchy of Weswick into the southern areas of the continent. Supported by the current Aerinsithe Emperor, the corrupt Andrusha, turmoil broke out globally. A rather unimportant Aerinsithe - Bleu - defected from his family, running away with a Soamotidh princess and her siblings; Tolmie, Raibert (Rabbie) and the youngest, Maisie Meredith. Along with them came Aleksei Vanatol, an outspoken critic of Weswick's invasion and rebel that was on death row for "treason." They established a life at the giant seaside cliffs later known as Bleu's Cliffs, until the elder brother of Bleu, Simone, went after his brother. While the conflict between the two insignificant Aerinsithes at first were unimportant, they were later blown to much larger proportions when with the help of Princess Tolmie and Princess Avenir - the Heir - Bleu Aerinsithe helped negotiate the end of the First Loscan Wars. Besides other, lesser important events such as affairs and other such scandals, the next several decades went by much more calmly, until, that is, the Siyan Massacre.
The Purishan Age
"You ever wonder why everyone hates us, dad? Because I'd think it'd be obvious by now, but I guess not. Don't be surprised when they try to kill us all, because I assure you it will happen someday. The Siyan Massacre all over again." - Avsey AerinsitheDue to the corruption of the last two Aerinsithe emperors, the family was not as popular when the Siyan Massacre occurred. For some large event - a political one - the majority of the family had gone to the city of Siyan only to be mass murdered. One of the survivors was that of Dyuvitris, seventh in the line of succession. With all six before him dead, the angry young man inherited the throne. While him came an iron fist, more Loscan Wars, and a great and new divide between different classes. This went onto for several decades, causing rebellions all across Mosin and rising fury. Atrocities were occuring all across the globe, with Weswick gaining more and more control of the Southron nations on the continent of Loscan. Time continued to pass by like this, until plans for assassinations and massacres were being planned. And they did happen; the Aerinsithe family was once again ambushed in several locations, with children and the popular Avsey being spared. Despite his claims it'd happen someday, Avsey Aerinsithe was shocked and devastated to the born, having lost the majority of his family. Despite this, he managed to pull himself together enough to make a beloved Emperor, ending the Purishan Age and stopping the current Loscan Wars before ultimately committing suicide, thus leaving the throne to his child Mikhail, with bumpy leadership until the decades long war known as the Division.
