The Royal Pax Constabulary

The city guard of Pax, commonly known as the Watch. Commonly identified by their distinctive mustard yellow and maroon uniforms, as well as their burnished brass helmets, the Royal Pax Constabulary are law enforcers and keepers of the peace. Whilst technically a (very) minor knightly order (whose titles do not entitle them to use the title Sir or Dame), their vows forbid them from carrying weapons other than their signature batons, unless the city is under attack from without. This doesn’t stop them from carrying small knives though, which are as much eating implements as weapons.   The watch operate out of guardposts at each of the nine gates of the city. These guardposts vary in size from being a simple room for two constables to having small jails in their own right. The official headquarters of the Constabulary is the Royal Armoury where they have a small wing of a building largely used by the Knights of the Quartered Rose. As a result of a mutual animosity between the Knights of the Quartered Rose (the nation’s most prestigious knightly order), and the Constabulary (the nation’s least prestigious knightly order), the unofficial guard headquarters is in the Armensgate.   The watch has a reputation for being a variable quantity. Whilst there are some well-liked constables who are fair at enforcing the law, like Constable Kardina Mintleaf, there are others who have gained a reputation for heavy handedness, or for taking bribes to look the other way. The head of the watch is Captain Grey Mountaindark, a no-nonsense dwarf who joined over a hundred years ago after the previous head of the watch, Captain Jaspar Fredrick, died whilst saving Grey’s daughter from an armed mithril thief.   The founder of the Royal Pax Constabulary was Sir Horatio Caine who reformed the force from a former situation of independent thieftakers who were often little more than organised criminals with self-made titles. A man dedicated to justice, and known for his distinctive gnomish spectacles of scrying which allowed him to see minute details left behind by criminals, Horatio petitioned the Crown for the formation of a knightly order dedicated to the investigation of crime scenes and the prevention of crime. Swearing oaths to Abadar, the Constabulary was initially known as the Order of the Keys, but their powers were substantially reduced after the Order discovered substantial criminal dealings in the Royal Court. Renamed the Royal Pax Constabulary, the Watch is a shadow of its former self.
