Medicine

One of the more unusual members, Medicine is one of the The 5 Afflictions of Society: a group of metaphysical beings who personify the five defining features of human society (Medicine, Industry, Sex, Faith & Culture).

They require human hosts to influence the events within society. On their own, all they can do is watch as power shifts between the group as one of the five categories gains or loses relevance in society as a whole.

As long as five humans still exist, all five afflictions live on. If humanity is whipped out, the afflictions are whipped out as well.

Medicine is the representation of discovery and the need for humans to understand the world around them. It possesses a complete collection of everything humans have ever discovered over the course of their existence. And its sole purpose is to continue that pursuit of knowledge until it understands everything in the universe.

Deal with Mr. Houndsmoth:

However, in his hubris to understand the universe, he's contacted by Mr. Houndsmoth who, in exchange for access to its repository of information, gives Medicine access to The Abyss in order to understand the one thing Medicine could never understand: the human soul.

However, the Abyss reacts violently and gives Medicine a human soul and also a physical body to house the soul.

By doing this, Medicine became his negative persona Contagion: a being whose exploration of knowledge unleashes all forms of plagues and pestilence on man.

To keep him from killing all of human kind, the remaining Afflictions lock Medicine in the Loch Gaisgeil Pagoda at Houndsmoth Manor.

After Houndsmoth:

Upon his release, the creature known as Contagion becomes a hypochondriac who spends his time keeping himself from waving a finger in the fear of spreading a deadly plague to all of humanity.

Through Vivi's help and guidance, Contagion regains its courage and chooses to explore again like it use to back when it was Medicine.

 Contagion is the Heretics interchangeable seventh member. It helps them on again-off again when they need help with things involving the metaphysical world such as the band of demons known as the Jiangshan Outlaws, The 5 Afflictions of Society, The Scythian Sisterhood, & The Abyss.
