William Johnston & Mallory Craigshaw

Two of the hardest working people on the planet, Mallory and William are the only two salaried employees who are not connected to the Houndsmoth family (until Season 2).

They're like the school's grandparents. Mallory is the bubbly grandmother who takes care of the interiors of the crumbling manor while she absorbs herself in every detail of every students' life.

William is the gruff grandfather who uses his hands to fix/maintain the mechanical systems and grounds of the manor without saying a word.

When Silas meets them for the first time, the pair is distant towards one another.

William is tight-lipped, only speaking when no other option is available. And Mallory has an obsessive devotion to the students and, more importantly, the headmaster keep the pair apart.

It's heavily implied they were once a couple (even married) before an unfortunate event split the two apart.

As he spends more time with Mallory and Johnston in the course of his daily "gopher" chore, Silas becomes a messenger between the quarreling couple. In this fashion, Mallory and William represent Silas' parents and the outcome, if for Silas' sake, confront the problems that drove them apart in the first place.

At the end of season one, Silas (with some tough love) forces William and Mallory to not hide behind their work and apologize. Over time, Mallory and Johnston get back together for a while.

However, after Houndsmoth, their fates are far from pleasant.
