Hunting

Hunting is the art of killing creatures for their parts. Think about meat to eat or trophies.

Hunting Trophies

The Check

To extract parts of an animal or creature, you must make either an Intelligence (Nature) check, or Wisdom (Survival) check. If the part is quite rare or magical of nature, the DM may call for an Intelligence (Arcana) or Intelligence (Religion) check as well. On a failed check, the part is destroyed or damaged, which is up to the DM's choice.   DC = 14 + 1/2 of the creature's CR (Creatures with a CR less than 2 don't add the CR to the DC).

Number of Attempts

Depending on the size of the creature, you can possible attempt to extract multiple parts, which also takes longer. See table below to determine how many attempts can be made. The 'Units collected per check' column serves as an indication.
Creature Size Max. Harvest Total time to harvest (min) Units collected per check
Tiny 1 120 1/4 unit
Small 1 30 1/2 unit
Medium 2 60 1 unit
Large 3 60 2 units
Huge 4 120 3 units
Gargantuan 5 60 (minimum) 4 units

Possible parts to extract

Here you find examples of parts that may be extracted. By no means does this list cover all possibilities, but it gives a nice impression about the possibilities.

Value

While the collected parts may be used in crafting or as an ingredient in alchemy, there are always people looking to buy these collected parts. Below you find an indicative value for each part, true prices may differ depending on the part collected.
CR Creature rarity Unit Value
6 or less Common 1% of creature xp
7-12 Uncommon 5% of creature xp
13-18 Rare 10% of creature xp
19-24 Very Rare 25% of creature xp
25+ Legendary 50% of creature xp
For example, if you would harvest a Pearl Bird's feathers (CR = 1/4, 50 xp), the value of a feather unit would be 50*0.01 = 5 sp. Then again, in parts of the world where the pearlbird is regarded rare, they may sell for a higher price.

Gathering Food

While parts and all are nice, the primary need to hunt remains to gain food. Generally, the meat gained from hunting will spoiled if not kept at nice conditions, or isn't salted. A character makes a Wisdom (Survival) check to see how much meat you retrieve from the hunt (DM decides the DC).
