MAGGIE MAIDENHEAD; OR, MAGGIE THE LOBLOLLY BOY
FOR I am a girl whose deep in love and always will I be,
So I set sail athwart the ocean and across her pale red sea.
I took for the ‘Tirade’ her sails so white and donned that cap so red,
I set sail for my love Robert for him ‘n to take’n my maidenhead.
When one night I sat a drowsing, making ready I was for sleep,
And the Surgeon he sighed and says to me, “Oh I wish you was a she.”
“Your cherry cheek and ruby lip they have to me misled-
For if you was a sweet young lass, I’d take’n your Maidenhead.”
“Dear Surgeon, friend of mine, you needn’t to complain;
A woman-born so am I, and and Maggie is my name.”
“And joy to it, so it is, I have glee for me ahead,
I sail for my love Robert, for him ‘n to take’n my maidenhead.”
But the Surgeon went to thinking, how long ‘n since he’d turned ashore.
And he set about his potions and made her draft. For-
Ahough she wouldn‘t know it, he set Maggie gently in her bed,
And Robert would not be the one, n' to take’n her Maidenhead.

A young maid dresses in male clothing—a lobbloly boys "red [cap]"—to sail for her bretrothed "Robert", but instead, she is ultimately drugged and presumably raped by the ships surgeon, after revealing herself to be a woman.
