Broad Street Seminary

A two story stone structure in the heart of the city. It is far from a glamorous life. The Seminary is operated by two clerics, the kind, if ineffectual, Brother Mingot Lotharis , and the haughty and sharp tongued Brother Tolly Magasonne, At any one time there are as many as two dozen acolytes at the Broad Street Seminary.   You sleep in one of two communal rooms on straw stuffed mattresses, eat simple, bland fare, and your days are heavily regimented, invariably following this pattern:
  • Awaken before dawn (it is often wondered how exactly Brother Mingot awakens to ring the awakening bell the same time every morning)
  • Morning Prayers
  • Breakfast (oat gruel, scrambled eggs on Seventh Day if you’re lucky)
  • Lessons
  • Midday Meal (bread heal and weak broth)
  • Good Works (basically whatever the Seminary needs doing such as scrubbing floors, washing robes, mending robes, building repairs, etc. Acolytes are sometimes loaned out to help church allies or the city with manual labor)
  • Ablutions (self cleaning with well water and coarse rags. Hair must be kept trimmed and facial hair removed)
  • Midday Prayers
  • Contemplation (everyone sits in a large chamber lit by a single candle and contemplates the mysteries of the Church)
  • Evening Meal (Bread, and watery stew with some meat and vegetables, watered down wine on Seventh Day if you’re lucky)
  • Evening Services at the Cathedral
  • Evening Prayers
  • Bed
  • 6 hours sleep
Personal possessions are not allowed at the seminary. When you arrive, your things are catalogued and placed in storage, to be returned only when you pass Examination to join the clergy, or are ejected from the seminary program. You have two sack-like robes, simple undyed things with no decoration. You are expected to always wear a clean robe, so as one becomes dirty, the other is worn while the first is washed and dried. Footwear is a rough wooden sole with drilled holes through which leather lacings are threaded and used to bind the plank to the sole of the foot – basically a tied sandal. Acolytes generally stay in the Seminary for a minimum of 6 months to a year. Once either Brother Mingot or Tuuly feel you’re ready, you are selected to be Examined by a Cleric at the Cathedral. The Examination consists of questioning on ecumenical matters. Typical outcomes of Examination are being sent back to the Seminary for further instruction or, more rarely, being ejected from the seminary program for being determined to be unsuited to the clergy. One or two acolytes may be deemed worthy to advance from the Seminary to the lowest level of the Clergy, which typically consists of being sent to serve under more experienced clerics, sometimes near, sometimes far away.
