Voidmage

Voidmages meddle with things they do not understand, and should not understand. Unending darkness and emptiness is not meant to be comprehended by the mortal mind; it cannot be. Meddling in such areas is an affront to the gods themselves, and it is no wonder such men end up losing their minds.
  • Carylon Darrow, Historian
  • Career

    Qualifications

A working knowledge of magic and the arcane, and an obsession with the void.

    Perception

    Purpose

Voidmages were responsible for harnessing energy from the void for use in arcane and enchanted practices and technologies. They were responsible for some of the greatest enchanted objects and lost tech of the Mage Era.

    Social Status

Though once highly regarded, Voidmages fell out of favor with the masses after opening the portal that caused the Epoch of Peril. It is now considered taboo, and any mages caught dabbling in these arts are executed.    It is popularly believed that dabbling in the Voidamantic arts will lead to eventual madness as the mortal mind cannot properly comprehend the reality of the Void.

    History

Though there have long been mages dabbling in the dark and dangerous arts granted by the void, Voidamancy properly became a thing during the height of the Mage Era, when a mage by the name of Dukar Farsighted began opening tiny holes in reality and peering through into another reality. Dakar became fascinated with this other plane, a world of darkness, seemingly devoid of life or substance, and began charting this unknown realm. He recruited some of his apprentices to help him in his endeavors, and they became the first members of the Void Circle, the elite circle of Voidmages.   Voidmages began discovering sources of energy in the Void, and began drawing on these for power. These unknown sources sometimes appeared to move, occasionally being found in entirely new areas of the void, and sometimes staying put for years at a time. These sources of power were unstable and some horrific accidents were documented during this time, marking Voidamancy as one of the most dangerous arcane pursuits.   Towards the end of the Mage Era, the Voidamancers became obsessed with actually opening a full portal to the void, so that they might step through and get a proper look at what was on the other side. Until this point, the only portals they had opened had been small, barely pinpricks in the skin of the world. After much research and preparation, The Void Circle managed to open a large portal to the Void, drawing on the power located on the other side. Unfortunately, the portal they opened was larger than they expected, and caused a large explosion that vaporized the mages, leaving the portal open. It was at this point that the sources of power revealed themselves as demons that had been trapped in the void, and the Epoch of Peril began.   After the portal was finally closed with the help of a couple of Voidamancers, the Arcane Circle met to discuss the expulsion of Voidamancy from their ranks. Following much deliberation, in which the actions of the aforementioned heroes was taken into account, the Circle agreed to banish Voidamancy, declaring the practice taboo. The nations and peoples of the world soon followed suit, and all Voidmages were ordered to cease their practices immediately.
