Passnote

Passnotes are magically imbued pieces of papyrus or vellum, a single sheet of paper roughly 11" x 15".   These unique messaging devices are always found in pairs of two and can be used to send written missives over hundreds if not thousands of miles between their respective owners.   Using a passnote quill and scriveners ink, the owner of the item can inscribe a message of any length on the front half of it - the longer the message, the longer the delivery time. A message of but one sentence would transfer instantaneously, while one that is longer and more complex could take upwards of ten minutes to send.   Using certain ciphers or arcane sigils, messages can be scrambled so that only the intended recipient can read what has been sent. If the message is sent naked (that is, unprotected), then anyone who finds it can read what has been written.   Passnotes come in two varieties: Lesser and Greater.   Greater Passnotes are static objects, usually laid in locations that are permanent and well guarded, so as to avoid any harm coming to them. Greater Passnotes are very rare and are owned by the wealthy elite, either high level clerics, political officers or by members of the Imperitrix's household. Greater Passnotes are unique and cannot be manufactured.   Lesser Passnotes are weaker versions of their more expensive and sought after cousins. They have a limited range (usually less than 100 miles distance) and there is a 5% chance that messages will be illegible once sent. They can be made fairly cheaply, but generally have a limited (3d6) uses before the magic that created them dries up, reducing the page to nothing more than flakes of dust. Lesser Passnotes are also fragile, susceptible to water damage, fire and a whole host of other conditions that could negate their effectiveness and use. Great care must be taken to protect them, less an accident ruin them.   Lesser Passnotes & passnote quills can be found in magic shops, though price gouging is frequent with these items. Expect to haggle if you want to purchase a pair for less than 100 abi [gold].   Lesser Passnote: 3rd-level Transmutation (ritual)
  • Casting time:  4 hours
  • Range: Touch
  • Components: V,S,M (an emerald coin pendant with a rune of creation emblazoned on it, consumed during the ritual, approx. cost 100 abi [gold])
  • Duration: Limited Range/Charges
The caster must be holding each piece of paper or parchment in their hands during the ritual.  A casting of this spell adds 3d20+15 abi [gold] worth of each piece of paper/parchment. The higher the quality of paper, the further range messages can be sent and the higher the number of uses before the notes are used up. The highest quality vellum/paper/parchment will yield and additional 1d10 + WIS modifier to the normal number of uses, and a 1d10 x 100 miles to the range.   If the casters concentration is broken during the ritual, the spell fails and both pieces of paper/parchment are ruined and the material component consumed.   This spell cannot enchant any material other than paper, vellum or parchment to be used as a messaging device.
The Benefits of Wealth

The Passnote was created at the behest of Imperium nobles some hundreds of years ago, the spell used to create them the brainchild of the famed magus, Ynos Halfhand.   Halfhand spent three months locked in his tower pouring over ancient scribblings and tomes in order to complete the complicated spell that would allow the items to be enchanted. It has long been rumored that only 100 pairs of static Passnotes were created, and this may very well be fact - as no new versions of the items have been created in the last three hundred years.   The true, static versions of this item are considered priceless possessions, usually hidden from sight and kept safe and secret, their location known only to their owners.   Lesser Passnotes are more common, but are also prone to accident or faulty enchantments, and thus are not considered valuable or reliable.
