The Poet's Pipe

It's lonely, traveling the roads by night. In the day you pass the occasional traveler, but at night everyone except me has the sense to stay at home. It does mean that I get to make good speed, and travel far. Before the sun rises tomorrow I expect I'll be past Jerrinville and on my way to the ocean.   The only companion I really have on these night jaunts are the stars. I always like to find the Poet's Pipe - it reminds me of home, when my ma used to point to the sky whenever there was a falling star. She always told me I'd make it up there someday, and I hope I will. It's to my left now, slowly descending below the horizon as I walk. I've looked at the pictures in old star almanacs often enough to be able to project the image onto the outline the stars form - a handsome wooden pipe with smoke rising from the top.

Geography

The Poet's Pipe is a formation of stars visible around the land of Mythia. It comprises 5 stars that can be connected to produce the image of a smoking pipe, an archaic way to consume Poet's Herb. Interpretations vary on whether the constellation also includes the 3 pointer stars, which would form a tendril of smoke coming out of the bowl of the pipe.

History

The Poet's Pipe, named after perhaps the most talented Poet to have ever spellwritten, Théa, was named by the astronomer to King Tharren in the late 4th century, and this name spread over the early 5th century. Théa writes of these stars in her poem The Light of Evening, which has been a set text for Poets everywhere since it was published. The poem, apart from its famed primary effect of modifying Théa's crops so as to grow incredibly fast when exposed to starlight, had a secondary effect of brightening the stars in this constellation, so causing King Tharren's astronomer to name it in her honour.

I love the short story in the beginning. I also like the history behind the naming of the constellation.

Thanks so much! I wasn't particularly happy with this one (and to be honest I still think a look at it tomorrow will improve it) but it's a big confidence booster to hear that you like it :)
