The Republic of Tekoril (TAY koh rill)
Steam and Conversation
The Republic of Tekoril, commonly referred to as The Republic, dominates the continent of Tekoril and some of its surrounding islands.
Demographics
The Republic of Tekoril has a wide variety of common races thanks to their large, industrialized cities that attract people from all across Mytkora. It was founded by the seven bestial races created by Kebis in the early years of the world, and those seven races still dominate much of the continent. There are, however, several other common races including: Humans, Gnomes, Goblins, Halflings, Orcs, Dragonborn, and a spattering of others in the various towns and villages. Factory workers and other lower class laborers make up the bulk of the population, while inventors, trained craftsmen, guards, and soldiers act as a strong middle class. Military officers, politicians, merchants, and business owners make up the upper echelons of wealth and power in the Republic.
Government
The government can be described as a constitutional monarchy. The country is broken up into four states: Ammaditra in the north, Kanhar to the west, Sakyr to the east, and Wihar to the south. Each state elects representatives from their major cities (sometimes politicians from smaller villages make it in as well). These representatives form a Parliament in the capital city of Djekhen, where they appoint the executive officials and elect a monarch to serve as the chief executive in ten year terms. Additionally, a panel of judges that is appointed by the monarch and approved by the parliament serves to protect the commonfolk from unfair laws or acts by the other governing bodies. The government is largely disconnected from the day-to-day life of Tekorans, however, and is considered rather weak compared to Atheles or Isatis.
The current monarch is King Damos Do'tal, and he is 4 years into his second term as monarch.
Defences
The Republic of Tekoril has a small standing army and regiments of guards in each of the major cities. The cities are built more for progress and prosperity rather than warfare, so there are no walls to be found in Tekoril. Likewise, there are only two coastal forts that could be easily avoided should an army wish to invade. However, the Republic remains a threat not due to their numbers, but due to the elite nature of the monarch's personal vanguard. This regiment, known as the Alzami, are master assassins, warriors, and spies capable of infiltrating even the most well-guarded prison in Mytkora. Their reputation has been built over the years and they have never been known to fail a mission. Fear of the Alzami has prevented even the most ambitious sovereign from daring to invade Tekoril.
Industry & Trade
The Republic has many exports, although its primary industries revolve around advanced technological crafting. Some cities specialize in specific production, though the factories are becoming more spread out through the country. The most sought after creations include:
- Black powder cannons and ships outfitted with them
- Firearms and explosives
- Machines powered by steam engines
- Tools that utilize steam power
- Anything made with Usturium
Infrastructure
The Republic of Tekoril's primary advantages come from its rapid industrialization and technological prowess. They were the first to harness the power of steam, the first to utilize black powder effectively, and they also hold the only known mines for the precious Usturium, a valuable and powerful metal capable of channeling arcana. Aside from this, their standard infrastructure of roads, sewers, bridges, and the like are considered of about average to below average quality. The government's weak grasp on the cities leads to the ineffectiveness of various public works and maintenance, and infrastructure is one area where this can be noticed the most.
History
Tekoril started out wild and free, full of nomadic bestial races that rarely interacted with other clans or settled in one place for long. Kebis taught them how to thrive in isolation, and how to honor nature as they survived off it. As the decades dragged on and more and more became unenthused with this lifestyle, towns and cities began to form. Kebis was dismayed at the rejection of his teaching, but eventually accepted that mortals wish to prosper and advance together rather than roam and live off the land. While there are still some who follow Kebis' ideology, the majority of Tekorans have moved on to a more modern way of life.
Cities were independently governed for some time, but that changed with the reign of Cadros. Fearing decimation and conquest, the cities of Tekoril came together to form a national body focused on cooperation and mutual defense. Needing some form of military force and someone to lead it, the Parliament elected the Republic's first monarch: King Vatrem Alyada. Vatrem was of sound tactical mind and began organizing Tekoril's defenses. It is unknown whether this fully stopped Cadros from invading or delayed it in any way, but the people rallied behind their King and praised him for striking fear into the heart of the God-King. Vatrem founded the Alzami and established a long tradition of aggressive diplomacy that has kept the Republic at peace since its founding.
Largely independent of the gods by the time of the Silence, Tekoril hardly missed a stride when the pantheon disappeared. When other nations fell into disarray, Tekoril maintained its trajectory and surged ahead of the competition in many areas, primarily technologically. It invested in its people, completing two Grand Academies in Djekhen and Zakrata. From these Academies came the inventors responsible for harnessing steam and taming black powder. King Damos pushed for national focus onto these areas, and is often credited for the Republic's success in these areas.
