Derintursas is a true leviathan of the depths, a legendary kraken who makes her home in the darkest depths of the Frisson Sea. She and her territory are well known and feared by the Martelais with good reason. They know her as the Melusinae, a baleful spirit that frightens sailors with terrible visions and haunting sounds, that heralds misfortune and unexpected dangers. The Martelais collect records of attacks and sightings of the Melusinae in an attempt to learn about and even vanquish her. However the intelligence and cunning of the primordial kraken make predicting her a maddening task, as her alien strategies adapt year by year. Sailors’ yarns speak of ominous fates for those who travel the seas; no matter where they perish, if it is on the ocean, your bones will return to the lair of the Melusinae.
Legends tell of the Melusinae’s war on her nemesis, Grandfather Whale, spanning thousands of years of conflict. The stories of their battles have been passed down among sailors and seafarers alike, warning all who listen about the terrible tsunamis their clashes have spawned. Despite many climactic bouts, neither behemoth has claimed true victory, and so they find alternative ways to weaken the other. Derintursas seeks out the progeny of her eternal nemesis to torment him, and pressures those who fear her to do the same. Grandfather Whale weeps that his children are doomed to be eaten by Derintursas when their remains fall to the ocean floor, but their vigil over the ocean depths is the only thing that prevents her from dominating all the seas of Rilumir.
