Mazitamos is an Archfiend renowned across the Outer Planes for giving up his fiendish aspirations in exchange for incredible prowess at the forge. Ages ago he called out in a moment of frustration and was answered by the God of Invention. Sinodar the Tempered offered him a contract, ultimate skill in exchange for becoming a forger of balance. Mazitamos would no longer be able to place his bid in the great game of fiendish politics, he would no longer be able to create soul coins. The Forgefiend would have to work to keep the outer planes stable through his craft, adding to the wealth of ideas that Sinodar seeks. Mazitamos accepted and ever since has bent his powers to crafting a dynasty of legendary artifacts known as the Zitami, regarded as the finest artifice across the planes.
The Forgefiend’s creativity is not limited to the hands of fiends, he sees fit to outfit celestials, fey, and even the occasional mortal with Zitami as well. One constant between all those who hold one of his items is that they are bound to a contract with Mazitamos. Each contract has detailed and scrupulous binding magic to make sure that Mazitamos’ wishes are carried out by the wielder. The contract is an intrinsic part of a Zitami and is passed down when the item changes hands. It is known that the master Craftsman of Hell uses a collection of maker’s marks to reflect the type of contract upon his works.
As part of his pact with Sinodar to keep the balance, Mazitamos is unable to hoard soul coins like other fiends. Instead when a coin is retrieved or bartered from other outsiders it is destroyed and the soul is released. The aethrin spirit is bound to a new body, becoming a golem that serves and protects Mazitamos and his followers. It is said that he even swaps forms with them from time to time, allowing those deprived of an afterlife the chance to thrive for a short time in the guise of the Forgefiend. The golems are led by Nomen, who functions as the right hand of Mazitamos, overseeing that which the master craftsman can not.
Though incapable of conquering his own domain of hell because of his pact with Sinodar, Mazitamos wields an intricate stronghold for his passions. Mazitamos’ Manufactorum is a labyrinthian complex of forges where craftsmanship is explored without interruptions. People of all origins come to learn under him in efforts to gain power, but all must sign contracts before any knowledge is shared. The Forgefiend’s apprentices craft items in likeness to their master but these are not regarded as Zitami. Mazitamos revels in the artifice of his followers but nothing brings him more joy than the creativity of those he has released from soul coins.
