Phoenix

Faction of Gylidd Syn Aethri

Region of Influence: Most countries that trade with Gylidd Syn Aethri.
Symbol: A bright red feather protruding from a pile of ash. The symbol is normally worn as a pin that can easily be taken off if needed.

"We were ash. We’ve let the winds of time blow us from horror to horror. We watched as wars raged, peoples exploited, and cultures destroyed. We watched as evil triumphed over good. As ash what could we possibly do? We accepted our fate. However, on the horizon, a new world has been found. The evils of our world that have blown us along now move towards new wars to declare, new peoples to exploit, and new cultures to destroy. Enough is enough. We are more than just ash! We can fight against the winds. Together, from the ashes, a Phoenix will rise."
— The Ten Flames

Base of Operations

The exact main base of operations in Gylidd Syn Aethri is unknown. Most suspect that The Ten Flames can only be communicated with via magical means, but even that is uncertain. Still, Phoenix’s physical presence is far from a secret. Phoenix can be found pestering nobles and merchants in the port towns of Ormtona and Kor. Their favorite tactic is to dig up sketchy information on high profile targets and protest them with public displays and graffiti. They are also known to pass out informational pamphlets on the machinations and misdeeds of other others to travelers in the port towns.   Outside of the Ten Flames, the leader of the Gylidd Syn Aethri Nest is Shannon Darkstar. He runs his operations from the basements of local taverns, and rarely stays in one place long, usually moving from basement to basement. He’s a strange leader that keeps both a physical and emotional distance from the members of his Nest. This distance even extends to Cranes who are still in the dark about his exact communications with The Ten Flames. Shannon just spends his days booking the activities of the Nest and acquires information on targets from whistle-blowers. Also if Shannon doesn’t want to see you, you’ll never find him.

History of Phoenix

Phoenix was founded sometime within the last year. Some theories claim the organization has been around longer but most believe it started with the Age of Emergence. Phoenix is known more as a nuisance in coastal Gylidd. They are constantly pestering traveling nobility and passing out pamphlets to travelers about the dangers of unchecked power.   However in other countries their methods can be more extreme. It is believed that in Koujin, two leaders from Akicorps were recently killed by Phoenix. While nothing has been confirmed, this shows that the organization might be capable of much more than chastising nobility.

Goals of the Phoenix

The goal of Phoenix is to burn down evil systems. This could be greedy kings, ego maniacal councils, or scheming guilds. With the recent successful explorations into the Brume, new invasion opportunities have arisen for these corrupt systems. New lands that are contacted will not have the alliances and treaties keeping the known world at peace, leaving them vulnerable. Phoenix believes they need to take action now before their adversaries become too powerful to stop. Phoenix desires to take down these systems and make something better.
"Too much to read? Well darling, we burn evil, those that support evil, and those that finance evil. Hate evil? Join us."

Membership and Structure

Becoming a Spark

Phoenix often outsources work to local adventurers. These quick jobs are intended to help out the community and potentially scout out reliable members. Once a current member of Phoenix invites a new recruit into the organization and they meet other special criteria, they become a fledgeling.

Tenets

The specific rules differ depending on the Nest Leader. Some emphasize environmental protection while others emphasize community service. Each Nest Leader is allowed to create and enforce rules that compliment their own cultures and goals. However this is one golden rule that all members must follow:
  • Killing innocents is unforgivable.

Organization

Phoenix operates in highly compartmentalized and autonomous cells called Nests, each with its own leader and methodology for achieving the overarching goal.

Ranks and Responsibilities

  • Fledgling: New initiates that have yet to fully prove themselves. Due to the controversial nature of the faction, initiates are told very little about the machinations and goings on. They just receive quests and complete them.
  • Robin: Trusted members that have proven themselves to the faction. They are told about the general plans of their local nest. They are still left in the dark of who actually runs the organization and their greater plans.
  • Crane: Highly trusted members of the faction. They are granted decision making power within their local nest. They also learn about the broader machinations of the organization.
  • Nest Leader: A special position given to a select few trustworthy members. Nest leaders are responsible for organizing their local organizations and cooperating with other nests. They are also the only rank allowed to communicate with the The Ten Flames.
  • The Ten Flames: A council of former adventurers that run the organization anonymously in Gylidd. Due to their powerful enemies, they must stay in the shadows and stay relatively hands off. They keep track of the progress of various nests to make sure they’re following the factions goals.
The reward for ranking up is more opportunities for bigger paying jobs. Fledgling and Robin members are only compensated monetarily since the organization is relatively young and small. Crane and Nest Leaders are treated with much higher paying missions and sometimes receive political and financial connections within Gylidd to help indirectly fund their goals.   The progression through the faction ranks requires members to help progress the goals of their local nest. Fledgling in order to progress to Robin, are expected to give up something important to support their cause. This important something can’t be monetary, instead it needs to show how serious they are about the cause. Adventurers looking for a quick payday will never reach Robin. In order to reach Crane, a member must have shown willingness to die for the cause or perhaps contributed greatly in some other way. If a Crane were to break under pressure and leak information, it could lead to the deaths of hundreds. Finally, to become a Nest leader you need to be hand picked by The Ten Flames.

Phoenix Elsewhere in Myzelis

Phoenix is a relatively small faction with a mixed presence around the world. In countries that engage in more economic trade with Gylidd, they can be found in larger trade cities. The usual Phoenix hideout is a local dive that is away from the prying eyes of authorities. Most hideouts have a secret room where the Nest Leader hangs out and organizes missions. Under the name of the dive, Phoenix posts quests that adventurers often take. Payment is usually delivered discreetly and if the adventurers seem on board, they’re invited into the faction.   In Kaedo, Phoenix has two Nests working together, Koujin and Guo. These Koujin Nests are notorious for being more extreme than others.   Koujin Nest The Koujin Nest is run by Aster Perrishe, the hostess of “The Estate” bar and nightclub. She is a caring leader that prioritizes recruiting members she can create an emotional bond with. She focuses on removing the political corruption within Akicorps through radical means like destroying landmarks and political assassinations. Still, she strongly stands against hurting innocents even to complete missions.   Guo Nest The Guo Nest is run by Gate, the bartender of “The Estate” bar and nightclub. He is known as a cold and calculating individual that keeps himself emotionally distant from everyone except Aster. He’s protective of the environment and only recruits people that share pro-environment beliefs. He’s very untrusting and usually assumes people have ulterior motives until otherwise proven false. Still, he cares deeply about the few people he connects with and is serious about his goals. His missions usually involve financial sabotage and vandalism.
