Vocabulary in Terota
Recorded history in the realm is over 6000 years old and what comes with that long history is unique terminology cultivated by cultural development, movements in art and politics that are both ancient and new. Here is a list of some of the more common terms used across the realm.
Pink Mist: To refer to a general area in which there is intense violence. Also used to refer to a creature's violent death. The term originates from Charstania and the Second Brumosa Crisis, but saw more popular use after The Peligrosa.
In Sperta (SPARE-tah): To be out of touch; in fantasy land; loopy or high.
Imp: Derogatory term for people supporting authoritarian regimes. Often used to refer to Junta troops, pre-war government officials and their sympathizers.
War Chems: Designer drugs made by Imperial Scientists to enhance troop performance on the field and in combat that are meant to be mass produced. They typically increase speed, stamina and/or strength.
Water Credits: The most common currency across the realm are Credits, typically based off of the water reserves of Water Barons. The equivalent of 1 Gold Piece but the value can fluctuate depending on the state of drinking water in the Talarena Peninsula. The symbol is a capital C with a bar striking through the middle horizontally, which is the same symbol as the Imperial Credit.
Skeleton: A common slang term for constructs and a derogatory term for Forged.
Tóptero (Thopter): The short form for Helio-Tóptero, which are smaller airborne vehicles similar to airships. The most common one being the pre-war AR-40, which has two rotors on its side, one tail rotor and a mid section that can carry up to 8 people without cramming the space. It’s commonly used by militaries and sometimes as a private vehicle for very well off individuals.
Toon: A foolish asshole. A term originating from the Ayain language and popularized by Valians.
You’re being Vaom (VAH-ohm): To refer to someone as being too curious for their own good.
Terms and Phrases
AI: Artificial Intelligence. A construct with full self-awareness that can come in a variety of forms. Does not apply to Forged. Airship: Large flying vehicles made of metal, using propellers to fly in the air at high speeds. In the post-war era they are difficult to replace if lost and are highly valued. The most common of them being the BC-20 and its variants. They have four propellers, and are typically used to carry cargo and people across Karieba. Boria (BORE-e-ah): A city in ancient Arenian fantasy fiction, that is the home town for the main character of adventure stories in a world called Sperta, where the Brume doesn't exist. The main character being the eccentric and curious mercenary Vaom. Boria itself is a small part of the global society of Sperta, where Vaom calls home. Most stories are episodic, typically centering around Vaom and his travels to new and strange places across the world and interacting with the different societies and cultures he comes across. Modern iterations of the setting have had Vaom travel to space and to different planets in science fiction stories and comics. Camba (COM-bah): A general umbrella term used for Anarchists and Leftist originating from the Illagran revolutionary Cledwyn Camba. Computer: A device or creature that can perform complex calculations at reasonable or fast speed. They’re typically bulky with a terminal the size of the average person and a keyboard. They can also store data and journal logs. In order of rarity from Uncommon to Legendary there are: Radio, Tape, and Silicon Computers along with AI. Fed: There are two meanings for Fed. The most common one coming from Talarena is to refer to a foul odor. The second is mostly used in Karieba to refer to members of the Federal government, sometimes as a derogatory term. Federal Nota (No-TAH): The Gold backed national currency of the Imperial Karieban Federation which can be used across Karieba and the Aredián Republic. The symbol is a N with a bar striking through it horizontally. Fixer: A middleman for people to post mercenary work to. They’re typically independent and surprisingly resourceful and are often influential members of their respective communities. Going to Boria: An ancient phrase originating from the fall of the Apian Empire 3,000 years ago when the legendary conman Horia de Boria destabilized the Empire causing it’s collapse. Going to Boria refers to falling for a scam or lie. Perla (PEAR-lah): The Gold and Silver backed national currency of the Aredián Republic. The amount of printed bills makes it a prolific currency and is used everywhere except for Regency and Junta territories. It's symbol is a an O with a horizontal bar striking through the middle. Libredora (LEEB-ray-door-ah): An Arenian term originating from the activities of former Aredian President, and now canonized Saint, Dora Perreti, who with a large group of volunteers shut down the post-war Talarenian slave trade.
