The Laughing Lantern Pub: A Pleasant Place Not to Be Missed
An article written by Thalorin Windmere for the Aerolith Observer
Captain Mara Windrider, known to many as only “Captain Mara”, once sailed the waters off the west coast of Nagaani. Her reputation as a pirate precedes her, with tales of her cunning, daring escapades, and a treasure trove of stories only she can tell. Her fierce sense of sarcasm and sharp tongue are legendary, often leaving those who cross her path both amused and slightly terrified. (This reporter can attest to the Captain’s way with words!)
Lady Aderyin Ashthorn, an independent (and very wealthy!) noblewoman of Aerolith, is known for her grace, intelligence, and unwavering dedication to her friends. She is much-admired among the people of Nagaani, for her willingness to help others, as well as her infectious laugh and confidence. It was at her feet that Captain Mara collapsed after a particularly fierce sea battle that saw Captain Mara’s ship barely make it back to port. Lady Aderyin had Mara taken to the medical facilities, then hosted the fierce Captain at her own home while she recovered.
The two became fast friends. With Lady Aderyin’s support, and investment, not long after Captain Mara was medically cleared to swing a hammer, work began on The Laughing Lantern Pub. Her prowess with food and drink has made the Laughing Lantern reputable in its own right. Captain Mara’s pub is known far and wide for its Dragonfire Bites, a unique and flavorful snack that has patrons begging for more.
When this reporter asked if she’d share her recipe, Captain Mara gave a sharp laugh and said,
"I'd rather let the gap-toothed beasts of the sea nibble on my toes until they bled before I’d give up my recipe for Dragonfire Bites!"
But after consuming far too many of the treats myself, I can tell you two of the ingredients. Ember peppers, which only grow in the hot volcanic sands of Mount Wassaila, and Monk’s Moon Basil, which adds its bright singular taste.
Even more noteworthy than Mara’s Dragonfire Bites, is her pub’s reputation for a lack of fighting of any kind.
The Laughing Lantern Pub has gained a reputation as the place to go if you want to enjoy yourself without lonely sailors trying to woo you into a tryst, without flying fists or tossed furniture. In fact, the entire time this reporter sat, ate, and studied the clientele, not a harsh word was shouted by anyone. Unlike most drinking establishments within sight of the sea, smiles, laughter, and jokes were most commonly heard between drink orders.
The Laughing Lantern Pub is a singular experience among Aerolith’s many places to rest, and should not be missed. If you go, be sure and order the Dragon Bites, and tell Captain Mara “that landlubber with a pencil behind his ear” sent you!
