This spell detects any active magic.

Casting Time: 1 action
Range/Area: Self (30 ft)

Duration: 10 minutes

Damage/Effect: Detection
For the duration, you sense the presence of magic within 30 feet of you. If you sense magic in this way, you can use your action to see a faint aura around any visible creature or object in the area that bears magic, and you learn its school of magic, if any.   The spell can penetrate most barriers, but it is blocked by 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood or dirt.

Discovery

Detect magic has been in use for ages, but the spell was first developed for broader use by the gold dragon wizard Othrimesk.   In the days of war against the giants, Othrimesk served undercover in the ancient cloud giant citadel of Myrr, where he took notes on the cloud giants' use of magic. Using these notes, he was later to develop several spells based on the ways of the cloud giants, such as detect magic.   Detect magic has been in use among dragons for eons, and the knowledge was later spread to the elves of Amayis where it entered mortal use.
