The Magus Arcanum
The magical police in Peridot. They control the distribution of magic in the world. Offer lessons to students who seek them out and have either the money or the skill to be worth teaching. They also make a point of hoarding magical items and discoveries to distribute after ‘checking them for safety’ The Magus Arcanum are not trustworthy individuals nor are they the fairest but they are NEEDED in Peridot due to it’s hoards and troves of magic items available and the amount of factions that could abuse them for power. Restrictions: No criminals and only the magically inclined may join if they show prodigious levels of power. Trial: Intense study, becoming an apprentice to a member of the Magus Arcanum and then gaining a position through their recommendations.
Structure
The Magus Arcanum is currently controlled by the 7 Schools. The most powerful wizards representing each school of magic: Nu'ar'a Cleardark: A middle aged tabaxi male with grey/ginger fur who wears the deep Silver and Gold inlaid robes of the Head Diviner of the Magus Arcanum. Represents the school of Divination for the Magus Arcanum in most affairs and has done so for 35 years now, acts as the advisor to Imbros Verity in magical affairs of court. Tistol Rasyhthis: A Silver Dragonborn of 24 years old, widely seen as prodigious after taking over the role of head Evoker, a spot that was vacant for almost 50 years with no appropriate leader and a series of failed attemptees. He specialises in ice magic and manipulation as well as taking a course in the Mind's Jewel in battle strategem. Led a squad of Crimson Blaze for a time to push back the hordes from Harquin and establish himself as a war hero... though still sports a limp and scar tissue around his face from the war. Wears the deep, scarlet red inlaid with Ice blue filigree robes of the Head Evoker of the Magus Arcanum... the previous notable Head was Erolith Underhill and Tistol harbours a small dislike of Erolith seeing his move away from the Magus Arcanum as foolish as Tistol has fully bought into the idea of undermining the Magus Simulacra as opposed to ignoring them as Erolith did. Teaches Evocation and War Magecraft in the Mind's Jewel to students and mages. Yara of the Greymist: The first Goliath member of the Magus Arcanum and the current head of Abjuration, Yara of the Greymist is an absolute unit and skilled melee combatant who utilises her abjuration skill to support her in combat. She currently holds the title of 'crucible champion' a small, tongue in cheek fight club for the magus arcanum and Mind's Jewel where they hold competitions and betting fights amongst their mages... Yara has been unbeaten for the last 6 years. She wears the grey and Red inlaid robes of the Head Abjuration mage. She is a member of the Magus Simulacra and is currently deep in study of Dunamancy to aid her in combat, she hopes to establish her own school of battle wizards and regularly courts Tistol for them to join forces on this... rumour has it that her and Tistol's relationship is not strictly professional. Tilvin Kranzkrer: Tilvin is the oldest head of a school of magic, a High Elf that is 680 years old. He is an old acquaintance of Erolith Underhill and the two regularly meet for lunch. He is an incredibly skilled conjurer and a feared mage who, despite their age, still have an unnaturally intimidating hold over other mages seeking to take his position, he also has that attitude of 'old dude doesn't give a fuck and becomes chaos incarnate'. He wears the Deep Purple and sapphire blue robes of the Head of Conjuration and teaches conjuration, law and 'deep history' in the Mind's Jewel. Arog Xenovir: A Half-Orc Necromancer, he has given himself an incredibly long life and youthful vigor (it is estimated he is around 260 years old) he started the Magus Simulacra and is the closest thing they have to a leader, he is also an incredibly close advisor to the Jewelled faction and a primary beneficiary of the Magus Arcanum itself, in short, he has a lot of fingers in a lot of pies. Though, according to rumour his necromancy cannot sustain him for much longer and he is trying to use dunamancy to reverse the ageing process on himself... though so far has had limited success. He wears the black and gold inlaid robes of the head of necromancy and is known to have ordered the Mystin clan be cleared from their woodland home in the slaughter on them. Randal Chandrian: The chief Enchantment mage of the Magus Arcanum, also the youngest head of the Magus Arcanum at 23 years old. A Human who was raised in Dankon and helped with runic experimentation there. He vouched for Lyren Killian to stay in the Mind's Jewel as long as he did until it began to threaten his own position, he was accused of using enchantment magic on at least 75 mages voting on Lyren Killian's punishment though the charges came to nothing. He wears the Emerald Green and Lavender inlaid robes of the head of Enchantment and teaches enchantment and political speech in the university whilst also handling and organising the Crucible. Cindered Swathe: A Tiefling female, 45 years old, not the strongest illusionist in the Magus Arcanum but her successes in battle and in her travels have made her noteworthy and famous for her creative uses of the spells and propelled her to head of Illusion when she returned to the Magus Arcanum. Though she spends more time at the jewelled land of Ruby working on new creations with the artificers there or she travels aboard the 'Ashen Minister' her skyship where she regularly adventures in disguise despite her fame and the danger it poses to her. A member of the Magus Simulacra where she tries to include dunamancy in her equipment and tools of the trade... also notably had a hand in the creation of the rare 'illusory statuettes' such as the ones on the Magi's Revenge ship belonging to the party.
