Beacon

For a plane comprised of floating continents and islands suspended above a fractured planet, Beacon is an invaluable tool in that it doesn't move. Unlike the rest of the stars in the night sky, it appears to stay in a fixed point that allows for orientation and navigation by the different peoples of Namkural. It is also usable by those on Torresind, but much less reliably, since for some locations one or more of the continents may block it from view. Those living on the outer surface of Vyril still utilize it for navigation in much the same way.   Beacon is a bright, blue-white star quite apparent in the night sky. Even among other heavenly bodies, it stands out due to its radiance and clarity: almost over-large compared to the presence of other stars.

History

As far as those living on Namkural know, Beacon has simply always existed. No records have been discovered that note a date at which it appeared -- but the mentions of its use by sailors, travelers, and even Archivists are numerous. The name "Beacon" originates from the earliest days of Vyril, and it is still largely referred to by this moniker today regardless of plane, albeit in whatever tongue is native to each individual.   One of the sole exceptions to this are the luna sidhe, who refer to the star as Haxylla's Compass. Given the important nature of Haxylla as both a historical and divine figure, the star has taken on a borderline religious significance to the people of Vendramyr. Since she was first a navigator before organizing and leading the pirate lords who challenged the Eldimyran Empire, the star played an important role in her life -- and her followers have adopted it as an alternative symbol of her church alongside the more traditional compass rose.
