Festival of Colors
At the height of every summer, peacocks in the coastal provinces of Sadrom gather to celebrate their heritage and keep their culture alive. Despite the pigeon attempts to largely subvert or quash some of the more archaic tropical sylphen customs, their more brightly-colored cousins are devout in preserving their past and present, as well as their future. Ironically, this week-long holiday often draws the biggest crowds of tourists and pigeon thrill-seekers. Much of the population who can afford to do so regularly flock to the beaches at this time of year in order to partake of the festivities.
Comparable in vibrancy to the Earthen traditions of Mardi Gras or Carnivale, the Festival of Colors is characterized by costumes, lavish decorations, fireworks or magic displays, and extensive parties. Local food and drink are the true stars of the events, as fishing is at its peak during this time of year. With so many oceanic and tropical delicacies readily available, the peacocks take full advantage to craft ever-evolving dishes of seafood, fruits, and other local crops. Massive outdoor cookouts are held in the spirit of community, with attendees bringing ingredients, spices, alcohol, and some pre-made dishes to contribute to the feast. Whole animals are often barbecued for the gathered group, marinated with sweet but tangy sauces common in peacock cuisine.
Kabobs are another common frequently served during this festival, as they are easy to serve and eat from street carts. Especially given that tourism is such a major industry in the region, peacock merchants typically take advantage of the Festival of Colors to hold open-air markets of a larger and more lucrative sort. Selling anything from carved seashells and other trinkets to specialty wines, it's a time of economic plenty. Due to its importance in bringing more money into these resort communities, weather mages have been known to sometimes disperse or divert storms during the week so they do not interfere with the celebrations.
