Encounter with the Fey
When Mair was in her fifties, and on a trip, she saw a strange sight. Three humans on horseback, pursuring a fox with sparkling gold fur. They were clearly keen to catch it and sell its unusual coat. Pitying the poor creature, Mair sacrificed her coin purse to persaude the hunting party to leave it alone, and content with the significant amount of gold she carried, they departed.
Mair coaxed the fox out and found it injured, and for the next month she cared for it, finding it unusually tame and extremely intelligent. On the thirty-second day, she rose from her camp to find the fox gone, and a tall man with glittering gold hair sitting beside the remains of her fire. He introduced himself as
