The Cloudtaker of Yitmarish Fuw
The Cloudtaker of the city of Yitmarish Fuw is an ancient title reaching back hundreds of years to the attack on the city by the Dragon armies of Gyyal. It's said that the city, knowing that the armies were approaching, feared absolute destruction. The reigning monach, Queen Valair of Fince, sent out calls for aid to all neighbouring cities, but none answered. Their leaders were too afraid that the ire of the dragon armies would fall upon them next.
But news did begin to filter out among their citizens too. And eventually a young woman arrived at the city gates, requesting entry and an audience with the queen.
She was allowed in, if only to die along with the rest of them though the guards scoffed at the idea of her seeing the queen. However the queen heard from a courtier, who heard it from the captain of the guard, of the strange woman who had asked for entry to their doomed city, and sent for her.
The woman was Jad Wakesight, a powerful druid from the then-unknown Order of Emeralds. Her sister had lived and died in Yitmarish Fuw, and had deeply loved the city and told Jad as much in her letters. So Jad arrived at the city's hour of need, determined to do her best to save it in the name of the sister she had loved so much.
She told the queen that she could destroy the dragon armies, but she needed access to the highest point in the city. This was the much-guarded Tower of Faint Spirit, a place rich in magic and as yet uninvestigated magical treasures that had belonged to its former owner, which no one had yet been able to investigate. Queen Valair's courtiers feared that Jad merely intended to rob the tower and then run away. But wise Queen Valair put her trust in Jad, and had her taken to the tower and let inside.
Jad climbed the hundreds of steps, and reached the top of the tower as dusk began to stain the horizon. The sinking sun showed the shapes of dozens of fearful beasts flying towards the city. And Jad, weaponless, knelt on the very top of the tower, reached her arms up to the sky, and pulled.
Every faint scattered cloud in that ominious sky billowed in a second to massive dark menaces, bloated with shadow. They expanded miles in seconds, to fill entirely the skies above the city. Citizens not yet sheltering, ran screaming, convinced the end had come. But this was not dragon magic, but an act of love, made possible by a connection to the skies deeper than any dragon held.
The dragon armies swept upon the city, and dozens of massive winged beasts readied their lethal breath weapons. And that's when Jad clenched her fists and screamed.
And every cloud cracked lightning through the sky where the dragons flew, and thunder boomed through their immense forms.
And then there was only ash, drifting down to disperse across the city.
And Jad lay, pale and exhausted on the Tower of Faint Spirit.
In the days that followed, she was taken to royal quarters, where she slept and slept and slept. When she woke, the Queen and her court offered her every treasure within their power. But Jad wanted none of these. Her only wish was to preserve this beautiful city for the sake of her sister. She requested that the tower be left to her, and those who would follow after her. She would be the city's first Cloudtaker, and others from her order would follow to continue the protection of the city, when she could do so no more.
From that day, Jad took residence on the top floor of the Tower of Faint Spirit, renamed The Cloudtaker's Tower. She meditated each day on the roof, on watch constantly for threats to the city, summoning storms to destroy any that came. When at eighty five, she did not wake one morning, the city mourned and worried. But within a week, another member of the Order of Emeralds arrived, and silently took over her place, and her role.
Now, the Cloudtaker is a title given to a powerful druid or sorcerer willing to take their turn on the tower, to serve a decade in defense of the city. The Order of Emeralds perished long ago, but there are still volunteers willing to serve the city, for riches from the crown or influence or simply out of love, as Jad did. They serve ten years, and then another takes over. The powerful storms they can summon at will are usually more than enough to dissuade any threats to the city. Though as part of their role, they must also keep a careful balance between the intense demands they make of nature, and letting the skies be free to maintain their usual patterns. Chaotic weather, often destructive in nature, has followed when a Cloudtaker has been overzealous with their request.
At their core, the Cloudtaker is the first line of defense for the city when a flying enemy threatens. And someone of whom intense, constant concentration is demanded, lest an enemy approached unexpectedly.
