The leading merchant family in Helmfirth is the Thorne family. They specialize in exporting grain and livestock from the surrounding farms, and importing luxury goods from other parts of the country. The Thorne family has held power in Helmfirth for several generations, and their wealth and influence have only grown over time. They are known for being shrewd negotiators and ruthless competitors.
The Nightshade family is a rival merchant family that has been trying to overthrow the Thornes for years. They specialize in the import and export of rare herbs and spices, and are known for their connections to the criminal underworld. The Nightshades are led by a charismatic and cunning woman named Lilith Nightshade, who is rumored to have ties to dark forces beyond the town.
The Ironwood family is another merchant family that is trying to gain more power and influence in Helmfirth. They specialize in the production and export of iron ore and other metals, and have a reputation for being stubborn and prideful. The Ironwoods have clashed with the Thornes on several occasions, but have not yet made a move to try and overthrow them. However, their ambitions are growing, and they may become a more serious threat in the future.
The Blackwater family is a smaller merchant family that specializes in fishing and the sale of seafood. They have been largely overlooked by the Thornes and other powerful merchant families, but have recently started to make a name for themselves by providing fresh seafood to the local taverns and inns. While they do not have the wealth or influence of the Thornes or Nightshades, they may become important players in the struggle for power in Helmfirth.
The Silverlakes. They are a family of shipbuilders and traders who specialize in river trade. They have been trying to overthrow the current leading merchant family for years, but have been unsuccessful so far. The Silverlakes are known for their ambition and resourcefulness, as well as their willingness to take risks to achieve their goals. They have been quietly building alliances and consolidating power, waiting for the right moment to make their move. However, they are also known to be somewhat ruthless in their business dealings and are not always trusted by their partners.
