Mageborn Bonding

An ancient forbidden practice thought lost to time

I was born in a city that no longer exists, a citizen of a people that have been forgotten by all but Old Terran scholars. My father was a man of power and so I sought it for myself...it only brought me a lonely eternity amongst the denizens of hells I could never have imagined.

Mageborn bonding is referred to as the Forbidden Art by those that are aware of it. Crafted so long ago that its creator has been long forgotten, the incantation for the binding has somehow survived time, space, and myriad attempts to destroy all copies of it. Yet, somehow, it returns again and again to potentially lure in another young Mageborn just finding their powers and without the structure of others of their kind.   Because there has been no structure to the Mageborn since the Orden des Verborgenen Geschenks collapsed, several bonds have been formed over the years since its creation.

What is the Bond

Though the process of a ritual that requires the blood of the caster and a circle of power, a Mageborn is walked through the words to summon a bonded. This bonded is said to be able to grant them power, knowledge, or any other items they might wish for. However, the unknowing young Mageborn could have no idea that they were about to summon and bind themselves to a Hellspawn from the Planes of Hell.   Once bonded, Mageborn and Hellspawn cannot cause harm the other. And the bond cannot be broken except through the death of one or the other.

What Does the Bond Do

In ancient times it was believed that the bonding damned the soul of the Mageborn to hell (or whatever horrible place or fate their civilization had in death). This is why there were so many attempts to destroy the ritual.   Besides knowledge, one of the things the bond offers is power. This is done by the Mageborn allowing the Hellspawn access to their body. Because of the bond between them, a Hellspawn can shed its physical form and share its traits and power with the binder. However, this advantage has its own downsides.   Too many combinations with the Hellspawn bound to them can cause crossover to start to happen between the two. Eventually this will result in the combination being unable to be undone, the Hellspawn unable to separate itself from the Mageborn and return to a physical form. When this occurs, the Mageborn themself will become classified as Hellspawn and will slowly but surely take on more and more Hellspawn traits, as well as be bound by the laws of the Planes of Hell.   While some Mageborn in this situation are bound as denizens to the Planes of Hell, a few have escaped that fate. Should a Hellspawn willingly sacrifice themselves for their bonded - a feat that is deemed outside of the general rote of Hellspawn kind - their power will willingly be bound to their partner. While this does classify the Mageborn as a Hellspawn, they are bound to the mortal plane, not Hell.   Although there are definite negatives to such existences, eternal life, power, and a place in the Planes of Hell hierarchy are certainly advantages. They do, however, not have a clear place in the hierarchy and are more often classified with the Bhurid, as they are the most humanoid looking.
