Summer Nights in Port Etela
Not a long-standing tradition by any means, but a beloved one nonetheless, is the Summer Night Market in Port Etela.
History
Not a very long history, as the Summer Night Market has only been an event for the past ten years or so. It began after Port Etela really started to flourish under the Galdorian rule. The city became less lawless, cleaner, more prosperous, and generally a safer, nice place to live. It's not quite known who decided to do so first, but in an attempt to whip up more business, a restaurant near to the piers set up a small stand outside their shop at dinnertime, hoping the smell of their cooking would attract passers-by. It must have worked because soon others were following suit. The Etelan Governor and merchant council noticed the success and tourism potential of the night market that resulted, and made it a city-sponsored event during the summer months.
Execution
In the market district of Port Etela, shops and restaurants will close their shops a little earlier than usual to set up streetside booths out in front of their storefronts. Restaurants will have small cooking booths to cook right on the streetside, making food to order. The streets become packed with people as they meander from booth to booth. Musicians and street performers might claim a street corner, or an entire intersection, and draw a crowd of observers and fans. Vendors with more portable wares might carry their product up and down the streets, selling on the go. As alcohol is frequently sold and consumed at this event, it can sometimes get quite rowdy.
Components and tools
Food is the most common aspects of the market, and due to it being held in a port city, there are foods from all over the known world available. Fish is very plentiful, and the fried variety is the most common. Any food that is able to be eaten as celebrants can walk along the streets, browsing booths as they go, is well valued.
Observance
The largest, and city-sponsored days, of the market are on the nights of the full, half, and new moons of summer. Several vendors and merchants within the city will still set up their booths even on other nights, albeit with a smaller turnout of patrons.
