Cybernetic Steels
Under the umbrella term cybernetic steels lies a group of medical grade stainless steel alloys that constitute the primary component of the vast majority of cybernetic augmentations.
Properties
Material Characteristics
Cybernetic steels generaly are a low carbon, chromium, molybdenum, nitrogen-strengthened alloy of austenitic steel with small (usually <1%) quantities of silicon, phosphorus & sulfur also present.
Physical & Chemical Properties
Cybernetic steels exhibit good strength and high corrosion resistance. They are particular is biocompatible, have a low risk for allergic reaction, as well as the ability to tolerate water, making them ideal for medical implats such as cybernetic augmentations.
History & Usage
History
Despite cybernetic augmentation beeing the first vector of true augmentation and the advent of different vectors of augmentation since, cybernetic augmentations have successfully retained relevance in the 22nd century, although there have been substantial ups and downs for the cybernetic industry.
The continued success can in part be attributed due to low cost (compared to other vectors of augmentation) and the ease of working with cybernetic steels, translating directly into highly affordable modules. The first down for the cybernetic industry came soon after it's huge inital success when the the metabiological integrity was discovered by large crowds of once enthusiastic early adopteres flocked to hospitals and clinics. The severe impact that the sheer invasiveness a lot of cybernetic augmentations have on the metabiological integrity remains a problem to this day, although significant advances in more biocompatible cybernetic steels have been made since.
Everyday use
As the name implies, cybernetic steels are mainly used for cybernetic augmentations.
However due to thier durability, ability to be sterilized in an autoclave and other peferable properties, cybernetic steels have largely replaced older medical and surgical steels. Thus are used to for sugrical tools. They are also used in the manufacture and handling of food and pharmaceutical products where it is often required in order to minimize metallic contamination.
Cultural Significance and Usage
Eversince it's conception chromed cybernetic steel has been a symbol for the merger of human and machine and started the initial wave of proto-transhumanism.
Despite initial doubts that arose from the unforseen collapse of metaholistic integrity that early heavy adopters suffered, but due to the unrivaled versititly that a machine offers over even geneticly engineered biology, that metal trumps flesh in many ways and for many still the afforability of a cybernetic augmentation, they always have and still remain quite popular.
