Knight Captain Merrill Amlaith
Merrill was born to a family of carpenters from Gallia. Throughout her youth she would work at her father's carpenters' shop making tools and furniture. But this was not a life that Merrill wanted, she would often wander from her father's shop and watch as Sturnian soldiers and knights would come into the town square and watch them in awe.
She always dreamed of the adventures she would have if she was a knight, saving commonfolk, seeing faraway lands, and having status with gold to uplift her family from mere carpenters.
One day when she was eyeing the Knights that came to Glallia she turned a corner to head back to her father's shop and ran straight into a knight falling down into the mud. The knight bent down and picked her up, asking if she was alright and if he had hurt her. She anxiously replied that she was fine. With a chuckle and pat of her head the Knight began to walk away but Merrill would take her chance to tell the Knight to take her away and train her. Seeing that she was eager and serious the Knight introduced himself as Lord Eubert Ostrand.
Lord Ostrand would inform Merrills father of his intent to take her on as his squire. Merrill father would agree and expressed how proud he was of his daughter, and that she would have a better life now.
For years and countless battles Merrill served under her Lord eventually graduating from a squire to a knight herself. Lord Ostrand became more of a father to Merrill than her lord. Her connection with him would transcend mere servitude. And with her time spent with the Ostrand household she came to love another, Godwin Ostrand, Lord Euberts son.
Godwin and Merill would eventually come to express their feelings for one another, often leaving Orivae to wander off into the woods to be alone. They were happy, and for a time Merrill thought that a woman of her station could perhaps marry Godiwn one day and truly call Eubert father.
Upon discovery that his son had been sleeping with Merrill out of wedlock he was furious. He sent Godwin away to the capital of Sturnholm. As a punishment for Merrill he sent her to the province of Korthas to garrison the path of Korthas.
For years Merrill wished she could be in the arms of her lover and felt betrayed by her adoptive father. The only thing that drowned out her pain was drink and battle. She became a renowned warrior fighting the Orcish Hordes of the roaming steppes, eventually achieving the rank of Knight Captain of the Korthian Garrison in 1365AF.
In 1367AF she received grave news. Her lover Godwin had been slain at his wedding to Astrid Saunclair by Leovald Harpsund and that her former liege lord Eubert Ostrand was calling all that bore loyalty to the late emperor to help him strike down the traitor and false self-proclaimed emperor Harpsund.
She would answer the call with haste. Making her way to Orivae the same night she received the missive. Upon arriving at Ofivae she saw countless soldiers readying to march out. She spotted Lord Ostrand and fell to her knees upon seeing him, swearing her sword, loyalty, purpose, and begging for his forgiveness. Tears ran down her face, and as if she was reliving a dream Lord Ostrand bent down and picked her up just like he had in the Gallia market all those years ago. He looked her in the eye and told her he forgave her, and he would have her be by his side to the very end.
