The Endless Battle

For 148 years, the Afrea Empire has been waging war on the Kingdom of Pyre Glaa. While the cause of the conflict is unknown, Afrea claims the scarcely explored ancient ruins lying on the shared border of the nations is the rightful property of the Empire. Over the years, both nations have amassed vast military might. Afrea through vast troop numbers, by using slavery to accomplish most menial labor, allowing them to recruit the majority of their peasants into their armies. Pyre Glaa, however, has built great schools to all manner of combat. Nobles and commoners alike that show promise in any field of combat, be it magical or physical, are allowed entry to hone their skills, leading to a near stalemate in combat despite their troops being vastly outnumbered.
Many dozens of miles of the border, mostly near the many entrances to the ancient ruins, have been scared and made barren by the conflict, yet it is extremely rare for the fighting to every make it to a town, and no parties have made it far enough beyond each other's borders to potentially raid a city, leaving a dangerous but thin, militarized and often actively contested zone of combat along nearly the entire border, bulging around known ruins. Vast supply lines have been established running supplies to and from all over the continent and the contested areas at the border.
