The Diary of Isla Freewater

Found at her pillaged home in the village of Scourge by Owyn of Netheril
15 Mirtul - My da has gotten permission to open the old mine. It has been years now since the rust monsters prowled our lands, and all remember the prosperity of the old times, when the mining of copper made even the lowest of families rich. Da thinks that surely there are untapped veins thatwe can find, and he is determined to do so...   21 Mirtul - Da and my brother have been working the main tunnels, but no luck. Ethan says they found a small opening off the main that was filled with sand, but appears after some clearing to lead to a larger passage. Ethan and da plan to return tomorrow.   22 Mirtul - Da and my brother are way overdue. The sun has set, and they should have been here for supper.   Something was happening in the lower village. I heard sounds of fighting. I am frightened. I have bolted my door, but something is here.

From the journal of Owyn of Netheril

After Shadow has fallen, Owyn rushes over to the pile of ashes where Isla once stood, and drops to his knees. He runs his hand through the mound of ashes and it stains his fingers. After tending to their ally's wounds, Thadgrack comes to Owyn's side.   “Owyn… I'm so sorry,” he says, comforting his friend. “We can bring her back, but you have to make sure to gather all of the ashes.”   Owyn snaps his head around to look at his comrade.   “Leave. Me. Alone.” He barks back coldly through gritted teeth, a sour bitterness painting his face. Thadgrack backs away and rejoins the party as they search for any other hidden remnants of Shadow's presence. Owyn kneels there alone for several minutes as every emotion overwhelms him. Through tear-soaked eyes, he begins to scoop Isla’s remains into an empty leather pouch. After he gathers himself, he rejoins the party as they board the Golden Endeavor.   “We need to get these people back to Scourge so that they can gather whatever belongings they have left,” He says to the rest of the party. After some discussion, they agree and set a course for Scourge .   When they arrive, the townsfolk return to their homes to gather what belongings they may have left behind. Owyn solemnly climbs the hill to his and Isla’s childhood homes, his party members following behind him. As they reach his home and the resting place of his family, he turns to face his friends. “I gave some thought about your offer Thadgrack,” he says staring at the ground. He shakes his head slowly and raises his eyes to meet Thad’s.       “She’s at rest. She's with her family… she's with my family… she’s with the townspeople of Scourge ,” he pauses, “there’s nothing left for her in this world besides me, and I was the one who abandoned her. To bring her back so I could see her again would be selfish. Let her be at peace.”   Owyn’s gaze lowers again as he drops his head to fight back tears. Thad steps forward and places a sturdy hand on his shoulder, consoling his friend. The rest of the party joins in silently.   After a moment Owyn takes a deep breath and opens the bag of Isla’s ashes, spreading them over his parent's grave. He drops to his knees and says a quiet prayer. Reaching into his robes, he grabs a small glass-blown hummingbird and places it on the grave. He stands and faces his friends, wiping a tear from his eye.
