Season One Recap
During the first season of the New Champions, Socrates — splintered into pieces by his own protective measures — worked secretly to identify replacement Champions…and to recombine himself into a singular consciousness.
Seven years prior, Doctor Destroyer in a single devastating moment, managed to ‘vanish’ all superheroes — and many other powerful individuals who would stand in his way (including supervillains who might oppose him).
The original group Socrates assembled included Maximum Resistance (the blue energy wielder), Cypher (the technomancer), Sandcrab (astonishingly strong, nanite-powered), Wildthing (mystic animalistic billionaire), and Runeforce (a cosmic energy powered inventor).
Several other brave heroes joined the effort in the early days including Faust, Field Effect, Isobar, and Windwalker. But many of these brave souls were ultimately vanished as well.
Early on, the heroes worked together to install a secure communication network covering Millennium City…then ultimately expanded that coverage to North America and connected it to disparate resistance cells across the continent.
But very soon, their first adversary became known — ALGORITHM. Foiled by him at every turn, Algorithm seemed to be an artificial intelligence (similar to Socrates) who had an affinity toward Cypher. His presence was almost an inevitability in the heroes’ early days working together.
But they persisted. As they began to confront the evil of Destroyer’s reign, the heroes foiled a kidnapping plot, disabled a philosopher’s stone-style device that was turning the river into metal, and then recovered an abandoned DEMON lair — reclaiming it for ‘the Resistance.’
Still keeping a somewhat low profile, the team of heroes agreed to assist one of their members, Faust, in his effort to identify who was behind the kidnappings occurring in his neighborhood. The team followed the leads from an abandoned carnival to an asylum on the outskirts of town. But the asylum was much, much more than it seemed.
At the asylum, the team uncovered the covert operations of NexHuman, a genetic manipulation-based operation behind the squeaky-clean corporate image of ‘improving healthcare.’
The heroes fought their way through the asylum, ultimately discovering that there was a hidden portal in the basement. The portal was connected to an inter-dimensional prison. But the team commandeered that prison — and Cypher and Socrates reconnected it to the DEMON lair the team had recently captured.
