Deseret Internal Revenue Service Headquarters Campus
Lesson number one, don't mess with the tax men. They may not be big, they may not be tough, but they are scary. And once they are aware of you, there's no escape. The Deseret Internal Revenue Service (DIRS) is the revenue service of the Republic of Deseret federal government, which is responsible for collecting taxes as well as investigating violations of federal tax law. The duties of the DIRS also include recording and filing the taxes of each worker in Deseret; and maintaining records of the financial decisions of the nation's wealthiest men and women. Its needs are massive, and the founders of the republic set aside a special district to construct the Deseret Internal Revenue Service Headquarters Campus. The DIRS is located fifty miles outside the national capital of Zarahemla, laid out in a neat grid to allow expansion over time. It includes its own gravtrain station, airship port, physical archive center, office buildings, public amphitheaters, vehicle garage, emergency bunker, and jail. The main complex, known as the Carson building in honor of the DIRS's third head Gavin Carson, is a gargantuan edifice built of Desereti Ocean Marble. Here the head of the DIRS meets with the heads of his different departments, organizing the efforts to make sure the Federal and Provincial governments are funded. By the Desereti constitution, the DIRS audits the wealthiest citizens/residents of Deseret and then works its way down. Due to the hatred that these individuals feel for the DIRS and the efforts they undertake to thwart it, the DIRS must maintain its own corps of lawyers and intelligence agencies. These organizations are housed in the Sapani building, famous for its isolated gardens.
