Eiennohanan Oyabun
An Oyabun (or Kumicho) is the honorary title given to the head of an Eiennohanan Yakuza clan. A fatherly figure for the criminal organization that he rules, his job is to care for the Kobun (underlings in the clan) by providing leadership, financial opportunities and stability, and protection from other organizations. In return, the kobun give the oyabun their complete obedience and loyalty, paying monthly tribute and protecting the oyabun with their lives.
The oyabun-kobun dynamic is key to the success of the yakuza, forming a father-son relationship that binds the organization as whole. The focus on honor and tradition in Eiennohanan society further cements these relationships, but the oyabun has a wide range of punishments available for those who break their bond. These punishments range from the various forms of humiliation, public penance or expulsion from the clan to the gruesome, such as cutting off part of a finger. Each member of the clan may play both the oyabun and the kobun roles, acting as a subordinate to those above him and as a boss to those below him, but only the head of the clan is referred to by that title.
When an oyabun retires or dies, the clan meets to come to an agreement over who should take the position next. While not an election, care is taken to choose a new oyabun who will not split the clan into factions, typically those who have demonstrated their ability to protect and advance the clan's interests.
In addition to his responsibilities to the clan, an oyabun is also responsible for the care of the common person living in his territory and ensuring the veneration of the yokai. This former takes the form of organizing labor into unions and the latter through organizing festivals to the spirits.
