Zerna Eshventi Duvell

Zerna Eshventi, Duvell

She never claimed to be Laurelian. She was Zerna Eshventi Duvell; she was her own race.
She always knew she wasn't meant for the life she was born into. Her family were Laurelian farmers, with a large plot of land. They grew corn and beans. She never wanted to spend her life in the flat fields, toiling every day for a crop that she could get anyway. She was neither the youngest nor the oldest, and she had plenty of siblings.   She grew restless, and as soon as she was old enough to go out on her own, she left her home and went off to see the world. Unsurprisingly, she found herself involved in a war. The biggest war of all time.   She was a fighter. She was recruited by another country to be sent out into the thick of the battle. She fought for everything she was worth, and she was good. She had an innate sense of what to do and when, something that helped her greatly in the field.    Once, her and her team were sent to retake a series of villages by night. As she prepared to strike, she and her team found a group of huddling children, hiding under an abandoned building. They were filthy little faces, shivering from the chill wind. Zerna looked into their terrified eyes, and her heart was drawn to them like a sailor to a siren. She made the split decision to get those children out of there, and back to somewhere safe. She knew there was a refugee camp only a few miles away in friendly territory. So, with the help of her team, they got those children onto the truck she had come in on, and intended to drive them to the camp. But before she could, shots fired. One of her men was wounded. The battle had begun.   As dawn came, and the sun shone on the ground that sparkled with the reflection of blood seeping into the soil, Zerna remembered the children. They were not in truck— a fact which terrified her, until she found them scattered about the village huddling in corners.     She and a few of her remaining team brought the children to the camp, and we're promptly called away to another mission. She never saw those dirty faces again, but she never forgot the fear in their eyes. From that day forward, she knew exactly what she was fighting for.    She had always known about the Laurelian power of controlling water —a partnership, as they called it— but she had never been very good at it. At home, her mother made her and her siblings practice using that power. Zerna could barely put water in a glass, and even that was hard work. Her mother could fill a hundred glasses with the ease and grace of an experienced ballerina doing a piroette. And she often did when the town had their monthly gatherings.    Zerna was never angry that she couldn't do much with water, nor was she jealous of her mother's talents and skill. She was quite contented with filling her own glass.    Until she saw the world, and fought its war.    Then she began to think of how she –or any Laurelian– could use their powers in battle. With the ability to move large bodies of water, sweeping across enemy territory, and flooding the battlefields, it would be a sure-fire victory to whoever has that ability. It would be a successful way to help those children. Something substantial.    So, with these hopes and ideas in mind, Zerna came back to Laurelia and went to the Irrigation Academy.
