Shark Wolves

Not to be confused with wolf sharks (sharks with unusually lupine snouts and aggressive temperaments), the shark wolf is a non-natural splice between a shark and a wolf. The shark half is a hybrid in and of itself, primarily genetically a tiger shark. These creatures have the general shape of a canine, although their fur is water-resistant. They have patches of waterproof, shark-like skin along their spine and on their legs, from which sprout triangular cartilaginous fins.    Shark wolves can be found all over New Z'hrat's frontier, although they tend to prefer wetter regions such as swamps, estuaries, and the seaside, where they can hunt both in and out of the water. They are known as an invasive species, and their populations have rapidly increased. They are seen as a symbol of power because they are strong, dangerous creatures, and they have dominated nearly every ecosystem they've been introduced to.   There is also a much rarer "dire" variety, a hybrid of a shark and a direwolf.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Shark wolves are a quadrupedal, canine species with water-resistant fur and shark-like fins. They are generally smaller in stature than either of their species of origin, with extremely dense muscle.

Ecology and Habitats

Shark wolves prefer aquatic or semi-aquatic habitats, although they've been known to thrive anywhere where they have access to adequate water.

Dietary Needs and Habits

They are a predator species, thriving off of any fish or small game they can hunt.

Biological Cycle

Researchers have noticed that wild shark wolves will roll in mud to keep their skin moist and protected from the sun during dry seasons, or if they're going to be away from water for extended periods of time.

Additional Information

Social Structure

They have been known to roam in packs. Many Z'hratians think their social, familial nature is very cute, especially as floppy-eared puppies play together.

Average Intelligence

Shark wolves seem to be about as intelligent as other wild canines, although they are not docile enough to train.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

They have excellent hearing and smell, and their eyes have been engineered to function equally well both in and out of the water.
