The Serpentine War

The name "Serpentine War" is a bit of a misnomer, but it is still the deadliest armed conflict in the history of New Z'hrat, and so the name stuck.   For far too long, the genetic engineers at the Genesis Research Center had been tinkering with the genetic code of the sea monsters native to First District before storing them in aquatic enclosures for further study. Certain individuals, including the renowned geneticist Dr. Sylphid Bateaux, had long warned that the serpents' limited sapience and potential for nearly limitless growth could spell significant problems in the coming years.   In 2493, almost three hundred years after the first experiments on sea serpents, these creatures, many of which had grown to the size of skyscrapers, broke free from their cramped enclosures and began to terrorize the city. All of the guilds, and the gods themselves, banded together to repel the threat. The conflict lasted nearly a year before the last sea serpent fell at the Battle of 241st Street.   First and Second District had been decimated by the sea serpents' rampage, and so began the long process of tearing down and rebuilding both the city and the framework of society that had allowed such a tragedy to happen. This rebuilding process was an uneasy peace, revealing old tensions between the humans and the immortals, and the guilds and the gods... but that's another story for another article, yeah?

Manifestation

Sea serpents (also known as sea monsters) are native to the ocean that borders First District, and the intelligence and growth potential were innate parts of the species. They had long been responsible for many shipwrecks, severely limiting the potential of fishing and sea trade. In a twist of dramatic irony, the Genesis had actually been attempting to breed a less dangerous, less aggressive sea serpent. Oops.

Localization

The effects of the Serpentine War were limited to First and Third Districts, with most of the damage occurring along First's coastline. Sea serpents still exist to this day, although the capture and slaughter of many of them during the war has significantly decreased the population.
